...the coven of cardinals in Rome, for electing a 78-year-old man Pope. Why bother? At that age, he's not a leader -- he's a placeholder. I wonder what they're waiting for...

Its been said that there is a silent rule that says to elect a Pope that will serve a short term after one that either serves a long term or one who is very well liked. This lets the next Pope to serve a long term come in right after a short term Pope and is supposed to make the transition easier for him.

I have no clue of its true...

Well, if it's true, they haven't told me. Of course, if they did tell me I wouldn't know it -- my 3 years of high school Latin have badly atrophied, and they were geared toward classical Latin as opposed to liturgical Latin anyways.

Makes sense, I suppose, but it has to be depressing to know you've been elected as the equivalent of papal KY.

This is interesting because as far as I remember the president of the United States only serves 4-8 years but I don't think many would say he is just a "placeholder." Interesting.

If the position of President were a lifetime appointment, 4-8 years would also be a very short time. To make a better analogy, imagine Bush appointing a 78-year-old to the Supreme Court.
