Cheers

So I've been watching Cheers, as I posted briefly about a while back. I got sidetracked and stopped watching for a while (Game of Thrones, new fall TV - like everything. I can post about it another time) and now that nearly everything that I'm watching is getting into that time of year when it's re-runs every other week (or every two *grumblegrumble*), I'm getting back into Cheers. I've been borrowing the seasons from my Dad - he owns 1-3, and I'm getting him 4 & 5 for Christmas. I'm on the second disc of season 3 and wanted to post a handful of thoughts.

  • I like Sam. Ted Danson is kinda sexy, which surprises me for some reason. He's kind of slimeball often, but he's still sweet and has a good heart. His pants for some reason - whether it's jeans or not - make him look particularly sexy in a wonderfully retro way. (Does that make sense?)
  • Diane is ok. She has her moments - both annoying and good - and she's a good contrast to the rest of the cast.
  • I find Sam and Diane as a pairing, however, SO. ANNOYING. I can see the draw of the push/pull, opposites attract stuff, I would even say there is a certain level of chemistry between them. But they are too much of a push and pull, and just completely and totally irritating. In season 1 they were aggravating as they moved closer; season 2 they were aggravating while they were together, and now in this first half of season 3, they are BEYOND aggravating broken up.
  • I like Fraiser Crane - his laugh is hilarious, and he fits well with Diane.
  • I love Cliffie, and it makes me sad and kind of irritates me that everyone treats him poorly so often. But, that's just part of it.
  • Norm is funny, but I find his Vera jokes getting old. It's a gimmick, tho, so it's all good (it still makes me smile when he walks in and everyone goes, "NORM!" followed by Diane's, "Norman?" and then Norm's quip of the day).
  • Carla is pretty great too. Another one who has her moments, and her rivalry/cracks about Diane are pretty fantastic. I love how mean and tough she is. :D
  • I loooove Coach. He is SO great. He's funny and so bumbling, and he takes everything so hilariously literally.
  • Watching this show REALLY makes me want to drink something, haha. Alcohol of any kind, but especially beer (which I don't even like).
  • THE THEME SONG IS SO PERFECT IT HURTS. I know I've heard it a million times before, but every time I watch a new episode, the theme song just makes my heart swell - and want some beer - and go WHERE EVERYBODY KNOWS YOUR NAME. (TV theme songs are the best... I love it when they're long and beautiful and show/tell you all about the show).
  • Overall, I find it fun and heartwarming, classic, often times sad (way more than I was expecting) - but, sorry Dad, not the funniest/best show I've ever seen. *shrug*

P.S. Just for the record, I'm 24, so I'm not ignorant of Cheers, I've just never actually watched it, and my Dad and I have gotten into far too many debates about TV, so in the end I had to watch Cheers to give a proper opinion. Also on my list: M.A.S.H.

tv: cheers, #irrelevant rambling
