I have recently started watching Cheers. My dad claims it is the funniest show ever, and constantly mocks me for saying I think How I Met Your Mother is the funniest show. I literally laugh a lot in pretty well every episode, and I have yet to get tired of watching reruns - when nothing is on, it's my go-to (or Friends if there's no HIMYM).
Anyways, he always rants about comedy shows that have serious moments or more serious episodes ("Why do they have to do that!? They're COMEDY SHOWS!") whereas I personally love a spot of seriousness once in a while on a comedy show (like HIMYM!) because it makes it feel a touch more relateable, or less shallow or something - or realistic (which, side note, is insanely hypocritical of me, because 9 times out of 10, especially with movies, I'm complaining that it isn't happy/fluffy enough or that all loose ends weren't tied up or it was "too realistic - I already live in reality, I don't need to see it on my TV/in a movie!"). For example, Big Bang Theory, which I do mostly enjoy, I feel like this past season, has been significantly less funny and more shallow. The only "serious" moments are Leonard/Penny shipper moments, which I won't even go into, because I kind of can't stand that pairing and I wish Leonard had less airtime, just sayin'. It could just do with a better balance - and some actual hilarity like it's earlier seasons. Anyways, my feelings on Big Bang are a whole 'nother irrelevant rambling post. ;)
Back to Cheers. My point is, though I am enjoying Cheers - it's amusing, has some good laugh-out-loud lines, the characters are good (Coach is fantastic) - it has made me cry three times and I'm not even through the first season (seriously. And yes, I am sort of weak when it comes to TV and Movies - I can cry pretty quick and easy - there's been a couple of truly heart-breaking moments). He always claims that a) HIMYM is not nearly as funny as Cheers, b) that aside from "the odd somewhat serious episode", Cheers never gets serious and c) how could I possibly think HIMYM is the funniest show ever. He does like HIMYM, to be clear, but he whines about their serious-er episodes, and while amused, he doesn't find it nearly as funny as I do. Plus he says "it's all about sex and only sex. All the time. It's not funny." I'm like, "Do you even WATCH the show?!" A significant part of it - mostly Barney's part - is about sex, but the majority of the show is more about dating than sex, plus there is SO SO SO much more to it. And my feelings on HIMYM could take up a whole 'nother irrelevant rambling post...
Anyways, so now I'm just waiting for my dad to get back from his business trip so I can call him and rant right back about his "perfect", "always hilarious" and "never sad" comedy show and how it has already made me cry three times. Though I'm sure his come back will be something about how I'm making it up or I'm weak. :P
