lumaki ako sa mga kanta ng bread, america, abba, elton john, england dan, cat stevens at marami pang iba. my dad must have owned at least 300 hundred tapes. it was specially and carefully kept at his prized cassette tapes shelves. everytime he would come home from saudi he would add more tapes to his collection. He owned two component sets, one was yamaha the other one was akai.
when we were growing up, despite of having so much tapes, there wasn't much music around our house. siguro sa dami inamag na kaya wala ng mapakinabangan. but i remember, my sister and i would sneak in to my parents basement and play around with those tapes. at times we would sneak out the tapes to our room. That was where i discovered, queen and i remember i was enchanted by their music. i can hear in my head the under pressure song as i write this entry.
once, my dad and i were walking at the mall when i was in my early teens. My dad, stopped by the JR music store inside a mall in Davao. He pulled my hand and told me; "Marie, pagtigulang nimo, unya daghan naka kwarta, i-promise nako palitan nimo ko ug Bose na speaker ha. translates to, "Marie, promise me when you grow up, and you have lots of money you will buy me a bose speaker. Every single time that my dad would go to the mall, i would see him catch a glimpse of that bose speaker sold at the store.
some years forward, when my dad came to states to visit me last year. I saw him walking back and forth at a bose outlet store, i can still vividly remember how a 55 yr. old man's eyes can lit so much. he dragged me in, and asked me to sit and to see the wonder bose. I told him, go buy, he said again, pag dato naka imo ko palitan ani, AGAIN: when you get rich, this is the only thing i want you to buy for me. then my dad smiled and just walked away. WHile he was helping my mom do her shoping, i went back to the store and bought the 3-2-1 series for him. My dad was the happiest person at that time. He was like a kid, his arms wrapped around the box.
My dad was just talking and talking about his bose, how he would watch his movies, or, how he would never allow any pirated dvds on his new system. even if it wasn't set up yet, he would tell my mom that she can't touch any of it because my mom is as notorious as i am for blowing up appliances because of wrong voltage compatibility.
My dad is a very simple man. He loved our simple life at the province. He pride himself and our family with integrity and honesty. My dad was my first image of a gadget lover. My dad was very kind for not punishing me for being the sirakaniko around his stuff. I think my standing love for electronics and gadgets have some deep connections for my deep admiration for my dads greatness.
I always feel that my dad has been my comfort zone. He never spoke a word, he was never the malambing or demonstrative type. But with the few words that my dad have spoken, he provided me comfort and a lifetime of wisdom to become a good person.
i think getting him that was my silent way of telling my dad, i would never fail him.
