K, have now had a meeting with Andreas Hoffman and it's not so straightforward as I'd hoped.

Yes, he'd like me as a PhD student, but the funding's the hard part. He's going to put in an application for me for a prestigious and very competitive studentship from the Cilnagie trust or something (which I need a first to get and even then I might not get it - though he doesn't know when the deadline is! Bet its past lol). Anyway, he thinks I'll get a first and would make a good researcher apparently. Says I should get a faculty studentship if I don't manage to get that one too. But then I might not get to work with him because they got a student last year :(.

But is making me feel more confident again. He told me it would be a waste if I didn't do a PhD whereas I was thinking I didn't really stand a chance.

And the potential projects he's offering sound completely awesome. One protein family's involved in schizophrenia, the other in schizophrenia, cancer and alzheimers, maybe more. They have unusual membrane binding domains (making them hard to express eek :S), and so would need to employ neutron scattering techniques and such as well as crystallisation, cd and fluorescence studies. He's sending me more about them and stuff, but wow, I am soooo interested. The fact its connected with mental illness is a big thing for me cause I'm quite fascinated in mental illness as an outside interest (yes I'm weird) so it would be incredible to actually be making an impact in that area.

Still, doors are opening again it seems. But ppl are building me up again. My teachers/lecturers have always done this and my insecurity always kicks in. Am I really good enough?
