I take back my previous post. Ubuntu 8.04 works fine.
All is working well on Hardy Heron. I like it.
I have wireless.
Surprisingly I'm not sure what I did to fix it.
I ran a number of tests and was getting some really odd behaviour and was in the process of documenting it all for a support forum post / bug report when I decided to restart the computer and re-run the tests. For no explicable reason the restart resolved the problem and gave me full wireless internet connectivity.
My laptop is a laptop again I can connect to the internet whilst sitting in warm room in the house.
Please disregard my previous winge about the latest version of Ubuntu.
Its an upgrade - not a bug patch. I didn't lose any data and I spent about half a day of fiddling with settings to bed down the new version. For an OS upgrade that's not too bad.
In retrospect I probably should have waited to do the upgrade until after I'd written my assignment.
