Jade Palace Lock Heart
Just finished watching it again. Love it so much.
My lengthy review.
Storyline: The novel Bu Bu Jing Xin + Boys Over Flowers = Awesome.
Palace follows the main story line of Bu Bu Jing Xin which is the story of a girl from the present time traveling to the Qing Dynasty and getting entangled in princes and palace intrigue. I'm offended Wikipedia does not mention this as an adaptation of BBJX!
This drama steals lots of plot pieces from Boys Over Flowers: (Maybe some spoilers...)
-4th Prince telling the girl Qing Chuan to look up at the sky to not cry.
-8th, 9th, and 10th prince are basically the F4. The do a lot of F4 pranks on Qing Chuan
-The whole Shigeru plot. The mom introducing a betrothed and then 8th prince grabs that person's hand instead of Qing Chuan
- 8th Prince letting someone beat him up to save Qing Chuan
There are a bunch more but I can not remember a lot of the beginning plot pieces.
I call this drama the historical version of HYD/BOF
5 reasons I love this drama
1. I love historical dramas
2. I love them more with a "pinch" of magic. The time travel plot.
3. The BOF/HYD plot pieces
4. THE MUSIC. The opening theme has a grasp over my heart. I find all the music pleasing to the hears. Even the silly music.
5. Qing Chuan. In the present she sucks but once she time travels I love her. She is altruistic, smart, and a quick thinker. I love how she puts others a head of herself all the time. I love how for the 1st half she is so trust worthy. I love how she learns to adapt to the palace but finds a way to still be a good person and yet survive at the same time. A favorite character.
***Warning****One plot around episode 12-16 is absolutely awful. Qing Chuan is sent to guard some Queen's corpse somewhere and the plot is just awful for these episodes. I skip them when re watching...so terrible...yet the rest of the drama is too great to be ruined by this crappy part...
The characters:
Princes in order of how I like them:
8th Prince Yin Si: He is righteous, strong, kind, giving, fun, and strong willed. He shares Qing Chuan's altruistic ways and I love that too. Love his "Tsukasa" qualities. He only wants to be Emperor to protect Qing Chuan.
14th Prince: Yin Ti -He is only in like the last 6ish episodes but I love him. He is another honest prince. Thankfully living out of the awful palace as a general. The war in the palace is probably deadlier than anything he has seen in battle...He is another honest character. He is playful and fun and also smart. I like how he has no desire to be empire and when things get nuts makes the smart decision to leave the palace. Wish he was in the show more though.
4th Prince Yin Zhen: He almost ties with 14th. He is an interesting character. You have a lot of feels for him. His mom is terrible to him and he is very untrustworthy and says a lot that he rather kill 1,000 innocent people than let one enemy escape (or something like that). His lack of empathy for people's lives is a major turn off. Mommy issues don't give you an excuse to be a jerk. Overall though he means well and just believe that sacrifices are needed for the greater good. Which makes sense. He is also very smart and a smooth talker like his evil manipulative mom.
Crown/2nd Prince Yin Reng: Naive, lazy, not motivated. However, he is loyal and trusting so that makes me like him better than his others brothers not mentioned yet. He is definitely the dumbest of the bunch though...and very easy to manipulate.
10th Prince Yin'e and 9th Prince Yin Tang: They pretty much tie. They are basically 8th Prince's lackeys. I love their loyalty to their brother. However 9th can be ruthless like 4th Prince at times. He will do whatever it takes to help 8th Prince succeed. 10th is more in the background than 9th but does typically agree with 9th Prince.
13th Prince Yin Xiang: He is my least favorite out of the main princes. He is very loyal to 4th prince, however does not respect 4th's wishes. If he was not so rash/stupid it probably would work okay but he is probably the 2nd least smart of the bunch. Qing Chuan puts him in his place at one point. He annoys me.
Other characters::
Su Yan - Her loyalty to 4th is strong. She loves him and will do anything for him. I feel bad for her that 4th just uses her but I wish she would just go away. I don't really like her at all.
Wang Jia Lin- He is Qing Chuan's friend when she travels to the past. She helps him become a famous tailor. He also sucks. I understand that being involved in Qing Chuan's life brings him lots of trouble but it also brought him fortune. He sucks and is not very smart at all. He truly sucks at life. I dare not say how as I do not want to give away spoilers.
The Queens all suck and are evil and manipulative. In their defense you kind of have to be to survive in the palace. i still can't bring myself to like them.
The King- I actually just have sorrow for him. ALL the characters, even the good ones say things to him to manipulate him. :( he is always very easy to manipulate. He stupidly trusts his dumb wives. He can't even run the palace. yikes!
Anyway, Its a good drama. I love it. A lot of people don't like it I guess.If you do watch it realize it is on the silly side.
