Title: Magic Memoir: Prologue
What: Over 60 years ago... 1946.
Notes: It's the year 1946. A young girl goes to read a book and has a chance meeting. This is the meeting between Amelia and her mysterious mentor that I wrote out a long time ago.

"Do you want to be a witch?"

Once upon a time, underneath a tree surrounded by white rose bushes, a little girl looked up from her fairytale book to see who was interrupting her reading time. A tall man hovered over her giving her a mysterious smile. She blinked once or twice, but did not reply.

"So how about it? Don't little girls like you dream about having magic? You do have dreams don't you little one?"

"No."

He rose an eyebrow bemusedly at her reply.

"No?"

The girl gave a firm shake with her head.

"I don't want to be a witch. Witches are evil in the stories I read," she said resolutely.

The man laughed.

"Is that what you think?"

"That's what I said didn't I?" she answered indignantly. The man sat down next to the girl, pointing at her book.

"What story are you reading right now?"

"Thumbelina. I can read the whole story by myself!" she said with an obvious hint of pride in her voice. The man laughed again, a deep humorless laugh.

"Not bad, not bad at all! You're a smart girl. But tell me; in the story the old woman wanted her own child didn't she?"

"That’s right."

"And that child was Thumbelina, a girl, much smaller than you. But she wouldn't have gotten it if--..."

"If the good witch didn't give her the flower that Thumbelina came from!" interrupted the girl proudly. She paused for a minute thinking.

"... Oh."

Her face became serious again when she realized the point being made. The man's smile grew wider. He looked away to watch the clouds float lazily across the sky.

"What you should figure out sooner or later is that witches or wizards are just like regular people. They can be good, evil, or both without meaning to. Or maybe they do mean to... It's all about the kind of decisions they decide to make in life. But all choices are made to further one's own happiness or the happiness of others. I'm interested to see what would it be like to give magic to someone completely ordinary such as you... Will you use magic to further your own happiness? Find happiness for others? Or will you continue as you are and only dream of perceived love and joy in your stories?"

The girl was silent for a while before asking,

"If I become a witch... What will change?"

"Hmm..." The man tapped his chin thoughtfully. "... You know, not much! Life might go by quicker, but the years ought to be kind to your youth. Ah, but you wouldn't understand something like that, you're too young. I'll put it in simpler terms."

He gave her a wink and continued, "If you practice hard enough, you'll gain power beyond your wildest imagination. You'll be able to achieve much impossibility, but you'll face a number of obstacles as well. You can only be good at magic if you're willing and love it with all your heart...Yes, love is an important ingredient too. So how does that sound to you??"

The girl stood up looking determined.

"I'll be a witch then! I'll be a good witch and help people become happy like the one in Thumbelina!"

The man didn't say anything for a while, but he looked pleased with her answer. He stood up and rested his palm on her head.

"Well then. Let's see how you'll turn out... My good little witch."
