I worked the evening shift at my restaurant tonight. A family came in; Dad was in his Army BDUs, two little kids (maybe 9 and 4?) and mom ate with him.
As I was walking away from their table after checking on their food, an older gentleman stopped me; he told me he wanted to pay for that family's meal. I about cried right then and there. I brought him their check, and he paid (he tipped generously as well). I asked him, "You've been there?" And he said, "Yeah. Never again." I told him, "Thank you," and he said, "Thank him."
When the family asked for their check, I told them they were all set, and that the gentleman at the table over there covered it for them.
The family was touched; again, hard to not cry! Dad went over to thank the older gentleman and they spoke for a while- it turns out they're from the same hometown and didn't even know it. The family stayed for a while; Dad talked with his son about why he had to stay down here for training; the family had come down to drop him off here from out of state. The older gentleman ate alone.
What a beautiful night.
