I don't generally read Death Note fic, as I've only just got ahold of the first volume of the series itself. That said, there are a few "20 truths" stories that I read and enjoyed even before I knew anything about the fandom:

*g* Most of these are old, though. Only a few were written within the last year. Also I realized that 18 months later, the authors I came up with are all friends. And most of the fics I came up with were written by friends. I'd like to see a rec list from someone who is a complete lurker in fandom, who doesn't pay any attention to authors. Then maybe you'd get an objective list.

By the way, Death Note/xxxHOLiC works SURPRISINGLY WELL:

Maybe it's because both series are kind of creepy?

For Death Note, my taste runs toward Concept fics (with optional Surprise Endings). Also Understated Humor and Weird Pairings, which is strange since I don't like crack pairings in other series.
