It wasn’t so bad, dying-not really. He thought the water would slow when it got out to the bigger water, but it didn’t, not really. This was a giant stream, so wide and fast. It took him a long, long way. He watched the banks go by, keeping an eye out, just in case-but no Hutch. Of course not. He was gone, and now, wherever he’d gone, Starsky was going there, too.
He sank, eventually. Water filled him. Silt buried him. Fish nibbled at his hair, spat it out again. Little bits of green stuff grew on him. But still, he didn’t stop thinking; he didn’t stop feeling. He reached out, sometimes, unburied himself from the silt, and played with the tiny creatures that swam by-patted the little crayfish, reached out for the tiny minnows.
And he cried; even under the water, he cried little plastic tears. He wanted to share this with Hutch. Even this.
