so, my "boss" (well he's not really my boss but he likes to think he is) just gave his 2 weeks notice today at work. he's never worked anywhere else, at least as an engineer. he's moving to pennsylvania where it's cheaper, and he's closer to his parents and parents-in law. he's been at mueller for 8 years. it was a shock to everyone. i don't think anyone's really processed it yet. i did know he was thinking of moving because i heard him talking about looking for a new house, but i assumed he meant in maryland.
anyway, i'm really bummed because he's like the only person i ever talk to at work about non work related stuff, and i was just getting to know him better. of course, he also was the only person at work who made me cry...several times. so, it will probably end up for the best. but you always keep thinking...did i have anything to do with the decision? did i make work so much less enjoyable that it was a factor in his decision? i mean, he told me what his reasons are, but you never know what else went into it.
also, what annoys me is that another guy did the same thing about a year ago. he had a house built in pennsylvania and moved up there because it's cheaper. this other guy is about the same age as my "boss." This "trend" (yeah it's only 2 people) is disconcerting because it means that my work doesn't pay enough for the younger engineers with families to have a decent size house within commuting distance to work. Both guys had to resort to moving to PA where it's cheaper to live. I hope it makes them more aware of the situation. We definitely get paid less than other people in the area. We get paid for overtime, but so do a lot of other people in similar jobs. for example, my STARTING salary in orlando, florida, would have been about the same as i'm making now, 2 years after i started. BUT, the cost of living in orlando is only 80% of what it is in Baltimore. Meaning, the same apartment i pay $900 for here would only be $720 in orlando, and it probably would be in a nicer neighborhood.
anyway, i can still pay my rent, and i like where i live, and i have met some great people here, but still, the whole pay scheme annoys me
