pretty good day at work today. the more diligent i am the less i stress out about it, even if i don't meet my goals. that's why i want to work at a coffee shop or something. there's no missing your goals there. a high accomplishment-to-working ratio compared to stupid database programming and computer troubleshooting. and a chai latte does a lot more to make someone happy than a working e-mail account.
i had my first chai latte today, by the way. wow, where have you been all my life!
randomness: today on the way to class i walked past a bus shelter that reminded me of one of my favorite stories about santa cruz. next to the bus shelter is a 10-foot wall made of cheap plywood, surrounded by nothing, just propped up from behind. and on that wall is a
pollock-style splatter painting. "why is this here?" some curious person has written on the edge of the wall.
well, this is just a guess.. but a couple of years ago, those splatter paintings were showing up on a lot of bus shelters around campus. one would show up, and then eventually they'd clean it off, and a couple of days later it'd be re-splattered. i liked it, myself, it adds a cool splash of color.
anyway, one day the wall came up, and it was quickly splatter-painted. and after that, i never saw another bus shelter painted again.
i think of how much cheaper it must've been to put up that wall than to have someone clean off five bus shelters once a week. it was such a good solution, and such a santa cruz one. peaceful compromise!
more randomness: while walking to get my dinner burrito this evening (after a 13-hour day i daresay i earned it) i had to pass through a big line waiting outside the local music club. as i passed the sign i looked up to see what band had drawn in such a crowd on wednesday.
"dollar night" is what the sign said. and some band i'd never heard of. no surprise there. i reflected that "50 cent beer" would be a very lucrative name if i ever start a band.
