As of a few minutes ago, Uni had asked her assistant to call the restaurant to confirm her reservation six times, checked if the advance payment had gone through four times, and twice wrapped and re-wrapped her gift. When she heard the door chime she flew up from her chair and tried not to panic.
She was being silly. Of course she was. There was nothing to be nervous about-- only it had been so long, she had been so wrapped up in work and art and Byakuran-sama, and aside from those few, short conversations about getting enough rest and not pushing herself too hard (he was one to talk!) she didn't know how he had been. It had been too long and it was her fault. She had missed him, so much.
She slid the gift into her bag and ran to the door, her bare feet tapping lightly on the uncarpeted floor. "Gamma!" she exclaimed, pulling it open.
Gamma smiled down at the girl as he leaned lightly against the doorframe, disguising his need to take a rest from going up the stairs (the elevator had taken way too long) in a gesture that he was well known for. Seeing her looking happy put his mind to rest.
With any other person, Uni would have tried to deflect the compliment. She wasn't comfortable being admired or flattered especially when she didn't think it actually fit her. But this was different, and so she smiled and said, "It's nice to see you! Come in, I'll just put on my shoes."
She took Gamma's hand and led him inside, making sure he was seated comfortably on one of the couches before running off to find her shoes.
Gamma watched the girl patter off with a fond look on his face before he leaned back, grateful for a chance to sit down. Now that summer was out and autumn was in full swing, his leg was starting to act up again. He made sure that Uni was nowhere in sight before pulling out the bottle of painkillers that he kept just within his coat; he downed them with a little help from the canister of whiskey that he also kept dutifully hidden from sight.
...To make sure this bum leg doesn't bother me for the rest of the evening.
The man then settled back, waiting for his girl to step out.

"I usually don't eat that much for dinner," she answered, hiding a smile at the gesture. "If I eat too much I end up not sleeping, and it's hard enough trying to get to sleep."
A little quirk of the lips, to lighten the previous statement. She didn't really want Gamma to worry or to think that she wasn't taking care of herself. He'd worried about her far too long already. "Besides," she added, her eyes coming alight, "I'm saving room for dessert."

Now that sounded more like the Uni he was familiar with. He had more than a few fond memories of him stumbling down the stairs sometime past midnight to find his favorite (his only) little girl sitting alone with a table full of sweets...
"Well, all right, if you say so. So," he adds after a moment, as he cut up a bit more meat, "how are things?"

Uni hesitated. It was a very short pause, as she rapidly tried to sort out what she could (things were fine, she was happy) and couldn't (work was exhausting and her days were empty) say and how best to say it (don't worry about me, Gamma). But it was long enough for him to notice.
"They're... okay, mostly," she said, choosing her words with care. "Lately I've been staying overtime a lot, since Byakuran-sama is on a business trip, but--" she smiled, sipped at her wine, "--I don't really mind. And at least things are easier now than they used to be; less people are giving me a hard time now. Before..." she let her voice drift off and decided not to continue that. It wouldn't help any if he knew.
She propped her arm up with an elbow and leaned forward, curiosity alive in her eyes. "What about you?"

That pause was definitely suspicious. Gamma measured it against what Uni said to him, about staying overtime and that white-haired bastard flitting off somewhere and that amalgam of very Uni-like excuses (read: how she attempted to outweigh the cons with the pros). He had only recently learned to do this with the girl. She didn't used to hide things from him, or pretend.
Of course, pretending was a two-way street for them.
"I've been all right," he replied easily, with his smile still in place.

"You're looking good, as always."
