He had arrived with Sawada, and, after a very interesting exchange, suddenly found himself on his own, re-establishing connections, wondering when they were going to kick things off, wishing that the night would end soon.

...That, and he was wondering how long he could keep avoiding a particular corner of the room, one where Timoteo Vongola himself happened to be seated. He had caught the old man watching him - he could feel the weight of that gaze, as if it were a tangible presence just between his shoulder blades. He chased it off, however, by stealing another drink from a passing waiter and occupying himself with it. The slower he drank it, the more he gave himself something to do with his hands.

After leaving Timoteo, Dino heads over Hibari - he's easy enough to spot; the only grumpy face in a sea of eager, expectant faces. He smiles a little, because it really seems like Hibari never really changed, did he?

He doesn't say hello when he comes up to him, but merely gave the glass a fleeting glance, and commenting easily. "You can't smoke in here, so you settle for drinking?"

...Not exactly what he needed at the moment, and it shows, in the slightest disapproving twitch of an eyebrow and a downward turn of his lips.

"It's what you do at occasions like this, isn't it? Drink."

"Not when you look like you're willing it to put you out of misery." Dino counters easily, hands in his pockets and noting that expression, but giving him a warm, friendly smile nonetheless.

"So what would bring you to such a place?"

"I can't not go to something like this. There's work to be done."

And even as they're talking, Hibari is back to watching the crowds, triple-checking the people, wondering if there was any contact he failed to touch upon, any potential investor or ally that he neglected.

Always the businessman, Dino notes, mildly impressed even as he laughs a little.

"Hey, do I have to buy your undivided attention, now?"

He has half the mind to drag the Cavallone over to Sawada and leave them to network, but it appears as though his boss is busy with Gokudera Hayato, the louder one between the two heads of Book Development.

...He hopes, vaguely, that they will finish off soon. The less time he has to spend with Dino, the better.

He smiles at that, amused. "It's not quite work now, is it?" In his opinion, there's only one kind of work to be done here - networking - and Hibari looked more like he'd rather be alone than anything else.

And for the first time that evening, the manager finally looks straight at Dino, and into his eyes.

...What an interesting color. He hadn't noticed before.

"I suppose you're right."

Looking away at moments like this was the safe thing to do. Besides, the man still fell under the entry for Annoying in his book.

Dino blinks - it's rare that Hibari would meet his eyes; he had the general idea that the other man thought he was something annoying and therefore not worthy of direct eye contact.

It lingers, but Dino shrugs it off easily, and he laughs a little, moving to ease a situation that suddenly seemed somewhat awkward. "Hey, you're not going to get shy on me, are you?"

"Because it's either you're shy, or you hate everyone." Dino responds with an easy grace. A brief pat on Hibari's shoulder, and he continues, amused.

"I'm not your enemy, you know."

Dino Cavallone, he is slowly beginning to realize, never really leaves him with enough options in any given situation. Hibari wonders if the blond man does this to everyone he meets.

"Maybe you secretly do." Dino quips cheerfully, not paying attention to the implications that it might have behind it. He sets his champagne on a passing waiter's tray, then glances over at the stage and the rapidly filling tables.

Kusakabe watches from a comfortable distance as Dino Cavallone enroaches on his boss' sacred personal space. He is, frankly, quite surprised that Hibari has shown this much tolerance for this man.

He decides to step in to distract his boss, to give him some respite from the other man's attentions.

"Cavallone-san," he says respectfully, stepping forward. "If I may speak with Kyo-san for a moment--?"

"Oh, of course!" The blond is amiable, even as he spares him a warm smile. He tilts his head a little. "I'll take my leave, then. Kyouya. Kusakabe."

With that, he slips into the crowd, but he doesn't get too far before he once again greets a woman he knows, with a kiss to the hand and a charming smile. He carries off the conversation with her easily, disappearing into the pockets of people.
