After some research, I've narrowed down the fish in my vase to be feeder guppies. They're life-breeders (they don't lay eggs), so that helped narrow the scope of research somewhat. Most guppies have a fan tail, but apparently this is due to breeding. So the blokes in my tank are really the descendents of some lucky fish that ended in my mother-in-law's outdoor pots instead of a fish stomach.
Knowing the breed certainly helps understand the fish better. Guppies like clean water (slightly salted) and food pellets. Also moved the vase to a shady spot so there will be less algae - my money plant won't need so much sunlight anyway.
Yesterday afternoon after a trip to Ikea (needed more stuff for baby's room), I spotted 2 little specks darting about in the water - turned out to be 2 very small fry. I managed to scoop them out, then found a third one later (was it a later birth? did I miss it the first time?).
Previous experience shows that these guppies will eat their young (anything morsel-sized, I guess...) so we're taking measures. Now the three fish babies are seperated in another tank. Think I'll need to grind the pellets into smaller particles to feed the little ones...
