The New York Times has an article about the violent rioting in the suburbs in France. It talks about how the rioters have recently switched from rock-throwing and car-burning to firing hunting guns at police, many of whom have been wounded. Yet in return the police have used tear gas and paint guns (to possibly identify people for a later arrest). They warn that they will not be fired upon indefinitely without retaliation. I can't imagine what would be happening here if the public were using hunting guns to attack police while rioting, but I'm sure several civilians would already be dead. The restraint of the French police astonishes and impresses me.
