Christmas Interlude (Ten/Rose)

Title: Christmas Interlude
Author: rebelsaint
Rating: G/PG
Fandom: Doctor Who, Ten/Rose
Spoilers: The Christmas Invasion
Summary: Rose still isn't sure he's the Doctor.
Disclaimer: I only started watching Doctor Who with the 2005 series, so it's obviously not my property, it belongs to someone at the Beeb. Although I wouldn't say no to a few hours locked in the TARDIS with David Tennant.
Notes: So this is what happens when you listen to non-stop Christmas music while obsessed with Doctor Who. My first fanfic in nearly a year, so I'm a bit rusty. My apologies. Edit: And I changed the title, fickle me.

"Hey."

It's a rather stupid thing to say, but for some reason Rose can't quite control what comes out of her mouth. She's standing in the hallway in her mum's flat, smiling shyly at this man that she knows and doesn't know all at once.

"Hey."

He seems not to care that her verbal skills are suffering. He just stands there, smiling down at her, responding in kind to her greeting. He's wearing a silly paper crown, and it looks ridiculous with his brown pinstriped suit, but it's really rather endearing.

"I didn't get you anything. I'm sorry," she says, not knowing where to begin. "I mean, I went shopping, yeah? But you weren't you and I didn't know what you'd want or even if you were going to live. You scared me half to death."

Rose pauses, taking a deep breath to stop her rambling and to quell the tears that are suddenly threatening to overflow. She looks up, into those eyes that should be blue, not brown. At that face that should be slightly leaner, and with decidedly less hair atop it.

Not that the changes are bad, mind you. He's quite attractive. He's just not the Doctor she's used to.

"It's you, isn't it," she says stupidly. It's the only thing she can think of. She knows it, in her brain, that this is the Doctor, her Doctor. It's really him and he's just changed. He looks different, is all. But she stops and thinks again, knowing that isn't true. He's already shown that his personality is a bit different than it had been. She knows it's him, but she needs to feel it, too.

She just has to be sure that it's him.

"It's me," he says simply. He's not smiling now, either. Just looking at her in all seriousness, and for a moment her breath catches in her throat.

She reaches up hesitantly, barely brushing his cheek with her fingers before laying her palm flat against it. His skin is slightly cool to the touch, but he doesn't move to push her away. Instead, he actually leans into her hand, never breaking eye contact with her.

He stares at her, unblinking, as she lets her fingers wander down his cheek, around his ear, over his throat, down across his chest, and back up to his mouth. She lets her fingers trace the outline of his lips for a brief second before deciding that this moment is becoming too intense.

Rose lets her hand fall back to her side, and smiles shyly at him again.

"It's you," she confirms. She begins to turn, to walk away, into the kitchen to help her mum tidy up a little, or to find Mickey sprawled in front of the telly. Before she can go, though, the Doctor catches her hand. This is familiar territory, holding hands with him, but it's still rare enough that it makes her turn back toward him.

"Rose," he says quietly. No more than that, and suddenly his other hand is cupping the back of her head and his lips are pressing against hers. A flash of memory comes flooding back - kissing him before, the other him, that is, in a brilliant light- and she knows it has to do with why he changed but she still can't remember it properly.

At the moment she can't think at all because there are a million things running through her mind. All of which are being overridden by one all-encompassing thought.

The Doctor is kissing me.

Before she can completely give herself over to the sensation, his mouth and his hands are both gone, and she feels cold, even in the warm flat. She gives a glance over her shoulder, watching him disappear behind a door, wondering vaguely what just happened. As she looks up, she has her answer.

Mistletoe.
