Day Five!

May 21, 2007 11:16

We tried to get an early start on day five because the first show we wanted to see was at 1:00. I don't remember what we did that morning, but it probably involved the pool and alcohol.

Mikey decided that since we were getting there so early, we should drive. I was a bit nervous about it, but he turned out to be right. We got there in 5 minutes, not an hour, and parking was super easy.

Mika took the stage and opened with my favorite of his songs, "Relax (Take It Easy)"

He was awesome. He sounded great, and I never realized how cute he is! I think I'm in love!

After Mika, there wasn't another band that I wanted to see for a while, so we just hung out in the VIP tent and drank for a couple hours. I know, I know, The Feeling was playing on the mainstage, but at that time, I didn't know who they were. I started reading all the hype about them AFTER Coachella, so I'm kind of bummed I missed them.

While in VIP I spotted Mika's band walking around together:

They seemed pretty cool, and I feel like if they'd stood in one place for a while I could have talked to them. I also saw Mark McGrath ordering a whiskey and being really obnoxious, but I didn't take a picture of him.

Later, we headed out to see Rodrigo Y Gabriela. Have you heard of them? They're pretty amazing. They play guitar in a latin/Irish fusion sort of way. They're like maniacs on stage. So amazing.

We didn't actually stay for the whole set because Mikey wasn't really into them and I'd just seen them perform in New York two weeks prior.

After that, we met up with the rest of the gang and hung out in the beer tent. It was pretty chill and I was kind of drunk, so I took some video:

Then we headed back to the mainstage to see Willie Nelson. I mean, I'm not a huge fan, but it's Willie Nelson! He's a pretty cool dude, so I wanted to be able to say that I'd seen him perform. He was actually pretty amazing. I didn't know a single song, but I enjoyed them all nonetheless.

After Willie Nelson, we headed back to the beer garden to strategize the rest of the evening. Kyle said he wanted to go see Lily Allen, who I'd heard of, but didn't know any of her music. He assured me that she was great, and right before her concert, we headed over to her tent to check it out.

Holy shit, she blew me away! I absolutely loved every song she sang and decided that I'd buy the album right away. After her first song she apologized to the audience saying, "I'm sorry I fucked up the second verse, but frankly, I had no idea there'd be this many people here!" She was so cute.

I had some trouble getting a good picture, but this one wasn't terrible:

After Lily Allen, I headed over to the Outdoor Theatre to wait for Damien Rice to begin. I was there by myself, because Kyle wanted to go check something else out, so I kind of spaced out for a minute. Suddenly, I looked to my left and saw Rodrigo Y Gabriela standing right next to me. I thought, "I have to talk to them." Finally, I got the courage and walked up to them and told them I enjoyed their set earlier in the day. Then I told them I saw them in New York and that I worked for their publishing company and was a big fan. They were really nice. Yay celebrities!

Damien Rice was of course amazing. As I've heard, his live show is very different from what you'd expect only hearing his albums. He pretty much rocks out at the end of every song.

After Damien, the place started to swarm toward the main stage for Rage Against the Machine. I don't know any of their music, and Mikey didn't care to see them, so we thought it would be a good idea to take off. And boy, was it. There was zero traffic and we got out of the lot and home in 10 minutes. Beautiful!

We were so exhausted from the weekend (or maybe from drinking since 1:00 p.m that day!) that we pretty much just crashed when we got home. I mean, I got in the hot tub for a bit, but then I quickly decided that the bed might be a bit more comfortable.

The next morning we sort of packed up, cleaned up the house, and hit the road by noon. It was a long drive and Awa slept most of the time, but we got back to Mikey's house around 5 or 6 (we'd stopped along the way for dinner). I took a shower, relaxed a bit, and then Mikey took me to my last dinner before I was to fly home. I gambled $20 at a casino and then we headed to the airport. I couldn't have asked for a better birthday weekend. I was so sad to come home, and actually still kind of am. When is my next trip??

coachella, vacation, music
