This is only the third time I’ve listened to this episode all the way through and yet again my opinion of it has changed. I quite liked it the first time but on re-listening I went off it a bit. A lot, actually, if I’m honest, to the point where I was feeling unsure about listening to it today. And yet, now I have, I find I’ve got over a lot of that bad feeling and I’m able to focus on the good stuff again. So, anyway, have some random thoughts.

  • Golf Echo Romeo Tango India! First use of the full call sign. Interesting. Have they actually referred to her as GERTI yet or does that happen later?
  • Martin’s EasyJet interview. I’m not that surprised that he’s trying to find another job, especially given the way he gets pushed around in this episode. I love Carolyn but I don’t think I’d want to work for her.
  • You can’t speak to me like that! I’m the captain! Mr Leeman, you horrible man, you made him cry. Poor Martin. I can’t even laugh. I just want to hug him.
  • Have you ever read a book, Arthur? / Yes, actually! White Fang! Twice! I had completely forgotten this bit. Arthur, you’re so adorable.
  • OK, Mr Leeman’s death. It didn’t really bother me first time round, probably because it’s only the second episode. I didn’t really know what the show was going to be yet and it sort of worked. But going back to it once I’d heard the rest of the show it seemed… odd. They just don’t seem that bothered by what’s happened. Well, no. Carolyn doesn’t seem that bothered, and it feels weird. However, listening to it again today I found that I’ve made peace with it. I think I can just put it down to some early installment weirdness and let it go.
  • Oh Martin, just make a decision and stick to it! (To be honest, I’m mainly annoyed by that because it’s the sort of thing I would do.)
  • Don’t rush into anything because I have literally nothing better to do with my time than ping you around the Atlantic Ocean all the live-long day. I love Shanwick ATC. Can we have her back?
  • Arthur’s little eulogy is quite sweet really. Goodbye. Rest in peace. Thank you for flying MJN Air.
  • Martin asking Douglas for advice. My absolute favourite scene of this episode. And I love how excited Martin gets when he wins at Simon Says. He’s like a little kid!
  • TOBLERONES! YES! FAR MORE PLEASED ABOUT THIS THAN I HAVE ANY RIGHT TO BE! OK I’LL STOP NOW!
So, final thoughts: better that I remember it being. It’ll never be a favourite but there’s a lot of good here and I’ve learned to accept the not-so-good.
