[for Chase]

Marian had promised Silence that she would not share his secret, yet she needed to speak to someone. She had spent hours on her knees that night, the beads clacking together through her fingers. Their noise was a familiar comfort, but no matter how much she prayed, no answers came to her. She could only think of her feelings for Silence, and her ( Read more... )

He hadn't heard at first until the Doctor had jostled him into awakeness and pointed out that his name was being called. From there, he grabbed his track jacket and slid into a pair of khaki shorts as he wandered down and opened the door. "Marian, hey," he greeted groggily as he rubbed his eyes. "Is everything okay?" His first concern was for her stitches because if they were pulled, he was definitely worried.

She realised suddenly just how early it was, and that she had likely woken him. "I am sorry, it is not important. I can come back another time."

"No, hey," he said, immediately snapping into a more alert, awake state. "Come on in, we can sit and talk. What happened?" he asked, now more concerned than before.

She would have argued, she was the sort to argue, but her uncertainty won out, and she nodded, "I was going to speak with Father Callahan, but..." She wasn't sure how to even start this story. "I thought, I wasn't sure..."

Chase wandered back inside to put the coffee on. "Sorry, do you like tea?" he said after a minute. He didn't, but he guessed other people might not loathe the drink as he did. "And go on."

"Yes, please." She didn't sit, sometimes things were easier to talk of standing. "I find myself in a situation I had not imagined possible, and I need some advice. I trust you, and there are few on this island I truly know."

Chase turned back around to fumble with the kettle a little, mostly mimicking the Doctor's actions as he worked. "Okay," he said, still not sure what was going on. "What's happened. Exactly?"

"I have found myself spending a great deal of time with someone on the island. We are of like minds in many ways, and a similar time as well." She was embarrassed, it was as if she was recounting a girlish crush. "We have gotten quite close."

"Well, but that's good," Chase provided, a little confused, because Marian didn't exactly seem very ecstatic. Her whole demeanor was more worried, really.

"At first I was worried about other things. There is one I love at home, but he is not here." Her hands were clasped tightly in front of her, "I don't think it's so odd to move on, to accept what you have here. To not count on things from another place arriving, or to think it unreasonable that even if one does arrive I might have changed."

Chase listened attentively, getting the mugs out. He hadn't loved anyone from back home in that way, so it had been easy for him. "How long has it been, here?" He'd moved on...well, he'd latched onto someone.

"Not long. Only three months." That she had given up so easily, found someone else, she felt as bad about that as anything else. Finally, she sat. "I did not mean for this to happen."

"I found someone a lot quicker. At first," Chase admitted with a rueful grin. "But it took me eight months to meet the Doctor. And to be honest, I wish I'd waited. Not that I'm saying you should. Uh...so tell me?"

"He is unlike Robin in so many ways. Shy and retiring, modest. He was a knight, yet I do not believe the reason he fought to be glory. I... He was a troubadour for some time as well. The second time we met he sang for me." Her cheeks coloured as she spoke, her entire demeanor changing. "I keep telling myself I should not feel this way, but I find it took root before I even knew it was happening."

Chase just watched, handing her a mug of tea as he slowly sipped at his own, bemused. "Are you fighting it only because some part of you demands that you do? Because if you don't, you think it means you never loved your other person back home?"

"I suppose yes. There is also another thing." Marian clutched her tea, not drinking from the cup, but appreciating the weight of it in her hands. "I must have your word that you will not share what I am to tell you with any other."
