I think you're dead on about the lack of logic in abstaining from participation. He should recognise the benefits of an evolving holiday and what it means to us today, family, a rapidly disappearing structure in America. As for bringing up the plight of the native Americans over dinner, sorry, no politics or religion at my table please ;) Save it for the drunken argument time that follows dinner anyway.
