DO NOT DO THIS IF YOU HAVE GLASS LENSES! DO NOT DO THIS TO CONTACT LENSES, EVER!!!!!!

So, I bought this pair of glasses from Sears Optical over a year ago. I really like the frames, but not so impressed with the quality of the lenses. They were all cloudy and scratched despite the fact that I don't toss them around like a football and in general abuse them.

I decided to do some reading and discover that cheap-a$$ coatings could be to blame. I got anti-reflective because I am in front of a computer terminal more often than not. I also discovered a possible fix other than purchasing new lenses.

Several people have had good results using Armor Etch. This is a glass-etching acid. It doesn't, however, eat plastic. Plastic is the only thing it doesn't eat. People soaked their lenses in it, and it removed the coatings that had gotten ruined. Voila, clear lenses again, abet without the coating.

So I tried it. The scratches on my lenses looked like frost/snowflakes, like something was pulling up, not lines, so I figured it was the coatings the lenses were treated with. I applied Armor Etch to both sides of the lenses and left them for five minutes. IT WORKED! I can see clearly through clear lenses. I am still getting used to not having the anti-reflective coating, but I can see better now until I can get lenses from someone other than Sears.

Sears Optical is the only place I've purchased from where the coatings started to come off my lenses. Would not recommend them if you need such things.

Here are the sites I looked at:

I got Armor Etch for under $10 at Michael's with a 40% off coupon.

Just saying. Not responsible. :)
