Character Relations Essay #1

The first from this meme. I'm starting it in posting order. So in this post, here are Kallen's thoughts on one of her female friends on Island: Mikuru Asahina!

Kallen isn't exactly the type of person to make lots of friends, let alone retain a few close to her and talk to them on a constant basis due to her abrasive and opinionated personality. While we see her chat with her classmates as she's playing the role of a frail and girlish schoolgirl, she isn't particularly close with any of them. So how did she make real friends while being Kallen Stadtfeld? By doing something small like joining the Student Council. In general, Kallen is more of a guy's girl (a.k.a she has more guy friends than girls) but she was able to befriend Milly, Shirley and Nunnally (one could argue Nina may fit but that's debatable, IMO). The more she's close with someone, the more her real self appears.

So what does all this have to do with Mikuru? Kallen used the same method: do a small task with someone and gradually get a friend that way. Little did she know that it was a fast one and Mikuru would become of her longtime friends.

Kallen first met Mikuru when the latter wanted someone to play Scrabble and they spent the entire day doing that together. The next time they saw each other again? Hello, nightmare week! At that event, Kallen's nightmares of seeing Zero and her comrades die in cold blood came true. Needless to say, she was very distraught. Several people either tried to snap her out of it or comfort her... so guess who among them showed up to take care of her? Mikuru, that's who! And when the nightmare event was over, Mikuru returned to check up on her who just recovered from the effects.

Ever since then, both girls helped each other out in random tasks! They taught Mikuru's pet Heartless how to swim (or made an attempt at least), chased a monkey to retrieve Kallen's Zero plush, played Scrabble twice together, moved the Zero cake to a proper hiding place, etc. Inevitably, embarrassing shit happens to both of them: namely the two finding themselves in revealing outfits and being the butt of the Island's jokes. However, the most infamous experience was when Kallen and Mikuru were paired up for the Moe Note (a.k.a the most awkward symmetrical docking ever). Luckily, their friendship remained intact and none of them brought it up ever again. But they still are a pair of awkward busty redheads.

While both girls aren't exactly on the omgbffs4eva!1 territory, they are most definitely friends. Mikuru is one of the kindest people she has ever known and she's willing to help her out if needed. It helps that her gentle and helpful personality is actually genuine -- Kallen had initial doubts given her jaded and suspicious nature but she gave Mikuru a chance and it worked out. While Mikuru never annoyed her like some of her friends have, there are some things that could use improving -- a part of Kallen wished that her friend could be more assertive and stand up for herself. Now that's not to say she won't protect her, she definitely will do it no matter what, but she knows fully well that she can't be with her all the time. Nevertheless, Mikuru is someone trustworthy; she's one of the few people that knows about her real personality and her true identity as a soldier of war fighting for her country. She figured it won't affect her friend directly since they both come from different worlds and not to mention that Mikuru promised to keep it a secret. That, and well, during the memory swap event Mikuru accidentally saw a glimpse of Kallen fighting in her Guren while Kallen... saw Haruhi molesting her friend. Oops!

Still, she had suspicions that there is more to her shy friend that meets the eye. During one of their recent conversations, Mikuru seemed very hesitant when the subject of the SOS Brigade was brought up (it's either that or the "something else" part that did it). Kallen could pry but decided not to because, hey, if it's personal business, she knows better to leave it alone. As long as Mikuru isn't in any danger or being groped inappropriately, that's all that matters.

Despite their friendship, Kallen couldn't help but feel that it's weakening somewhat since they haven't spent a lot of time together unlike years ago. Itsuki, during their conversation about the SOS Brigade (or specifically, Haruhi's real source of craziness), helped Kallen realized that she and Mikuru really need to talk more, it's been too long, they're not so close anymore, etc. And... that bothers her because she isn't the type to be so concerned about maintaining friendships yet here she is on the island doing that. Even so, Kallen will push those nagging thoughts of hers aside and seek Mikuru out when she's ready.

So in short, Mikuru is a total sweetheart who wears her heart on her sleeve and is right between "the person Kallen sees as a friend" and "the person Kallen will willingly walk on eggshells for". But right now? She's in the former category but if they spend lots of time together like years ago, it can quickly move to the latter.

Best Moment: Both times they played Scrabble! Also when they reunited at Mion's third festival and played water guns (although that happened off-screen).
Worst Moment: THE MOE NOTE, OH GOD. The nightmare event was pretty rough, too.
