Getting things done. . . unproductively.

Facebook status: Okay, I believe I posted this a few days ago, but my father was in the hospital: he had shoulder surgery in September and got a infection and had to have another surgery last Tuesday. Update: He came home on Friday and has to give himself an IV once a day (antibiotics), but he is doing really well. My youngest brother also made an awesome turkey dinner tonight: he's 12 and damn is he growing up. (I just want to say thanks for any positive vibes.)

As I’m sitting here, realizing it has been a while since I have really written some thing productive since November 30th. (The few blogs on here and facebook haven’t really count as they were something I had to create. . .) I had to help my father and brothers for a week: while my father was in the hospital. My brothers were good; but they usually aren’t bad . . . it’s usually the drama from their mother (my ex-stepmother) or from all of the work that my father puts on them. However for 4 days it was just Tom, me, and my brothers and it was really nice. Tom and I are open to scheduling as long as my brother’s schooling doesn’t get disturbed. They were also excited that Tom brought Skyrim, but they also played my Sims 3: Pets with me.

Anyway, I have been getting the question with my NaNoWriMo quite a bit. . . How hard is it to change the genre that you are comfortable with?

I normally write paranormal, occult and drama/romance. However I am writing a murder-thriller with lots of lust in it. The thing I believe is that thriller/ suspense and horror (paranormal) are all very similar. . . (I really more related to the characters so I more emphasis on the character aspects than the just the plot. In that way it doesn’t seem that much different than the other genres, maybe less blood as supernatural aspects.)

The thing is with this story I feel kind of like a rebel as I have had the idea for over ten years. I started to write it as a script when I was a freshman as I wrote the main female character as a young woman who I wanted to be at the time. (I roll my eyes now as I read the old script.) I realized the concept of the story was amazing, so I added a beginning which is what I wrote for NaNoWriMo 2011 this year. . . However I am feeling more for the murderer than I am for the main female character, so I am writing from both sides of the murders. (For that alone, it’s hard for me to say whether or not that it is difficult for me to write if it is hard for me to change genres. I feel that they are really similar. I just hope I can get enough suspense as I love to tell all of the details and mystery is what really builds suspense.)

I finished part 1 out of 3 for NaNoWriMo 2011 (64,516 words so far) . . . I plan to finish by February: Part 2 in January and Part 3 in Feb. I estimate my story to be about 150,000-180,000 words by the time I'm done. I do plan to rewrite a few scenes at the end of Part 1 before Dec 31 and I have other things to finish as well.

I think I am doing do something for me before I go to bed. . . hot chocolate and bubble bath here I come. . . J
