Small Adventures [rowing]

So, the erg race. I biked in to my office (in -5 deg F weather, brr), borrowed the erg from the physiology lab into my office, plugged in the cable to the desktop computer, and away I went. I'm 5 seconds slower than last year, which I believe continues a 2-year trend.

Then I put the erg away, took care of the campus animals (neglected project from Friday) and headed back home again, where my teammate L came along shortly to pick me up for a drive up to Saratoga Springs to pick up the Wild Blue Yonder from the place that refurbed her.

The shop that did the refurb work is pretty much a one-man show. The guy who does the work, B, used to work for the boatbuilder who has a shop just south of the Port of Albany, and said the other boatbuilder is a character. On the other hand, we basically reached mutual agreement that basically all of the people who are into boats are characters. Make of that what you will.

WBY's new decking fabric and everything look just wonderful, but I didn't manage any pictures of WBY in the midst of everything, so the "after" photos will have to wait until spring. I'm grateful to have had someone skilled and experienced work on the boat. He even found a replacement seat chassis with retainer clips for me, which means that the seat now stays on the tracks when the boat's flipped upside-down. The main reason this matters is otherwise the seat becomes one more thing that has to be carried to and fro every practice.

L also recently gifted me an older, partly worn-out boat cover. It isn't a perfect fit for WBY, but it could still provide some extra protection, so we bundled up the boat, put her on top of L's car, and made our way back home.

Just a couple smart-o-phone photos from the shop:

Another open-water rowing shell that was inside the shop with an interesting folding rigger design:

The shop is just large enough to hold 2 singles at a time, with extra boat storage under the roof outside.

We stashed the WBY way up high inside the boathouse back at home. I need to make a mental note to self to NOT ask L to do precarious things, because she's not as stable on her feet as me.

Then I went and had a beer with L and two other teammates who also participated in the erg race. Not ideal with Omicron raging, but damn that beer tasted good.

Fin.

Small postscript: thank you to
bluepapercup for encouraging me to get the humidifier going again. That did really seem to help a lot.
