Why are file paths so hard????

A number of years ago, I thought to myself, "You know, I should learn how to use LaTeX."

I think there was a period shortly after that that involved blah blah blah mumble mumble mumble, culminating in the installation of LyX.

Today I go to thinking about how I would really like to standardize my formats and layouts for the labs for Animal Physiology so they're easier for students to read and follow along with.

For a project like that, the thought of futzing around with stuff in a program like Word is utterly unappealing.

Somehow, the hardest part of starting to use LaTeX seems to be just figuring out how to download, install, and run the necessary programs.

This is the kind of thing that seems like it shouldn't be so hard. Yet somehow, it is.

Eventually I figured out that for some reason, TeXworks looks for LaTeX in a different location from where the installer package installs it. Once I pointed TeXworks to the correct location, I'm in business.

That seems pretty ridiculous. But hey, I am running a now outdated operating system, so who knows why that even happened.

Also, for installing MacTeX on an outdated operating system, eventually a person winds up at a directory with a whole series of files where it's not clear which thing a person should actually install. Super annoying.

Eventually I figured it out. And now at this point, I can say that if you can write HTML tags it seems like you'll be perfectly fine with LaTeX syntax.

So it looks like I might actually reach a stage where I can create nice-looking LaTeX lab handouts. Eventually. This entry was originally posted at https://rebeccmeister.dreamwidth.org/1439185.html. Please comment there using OpenID.
