five things meme

A while ago, Lisa did a meme wherein upon commenting you were given five of your own interests to discuss. I really liked it so I pinched it and Lisa gave me some topics.

Beverly Crusher: I have such a soft spot for Beverly Crusher. She wasn’t my first sci-fi love, nor even my most obvious (though I put a lot of this down to a general lack of Trekkie friends). She’s such an interesting mix of contradictions, which fascinates me. She’s so warm-hearted, maternal to all, and soft-spoken... until you tick her off and then she’s dangerous - she’s the only one allowed to yell at the Captain, and she knows it. Plus she’s a red head, and I freely admit to being a sucker for red hair. And Gates McFadden is a dancer, so Beverly has this strange dancing walk that I love. And she has the cutest crooked pouty mouth… yeah… I’ve said too much, haven’t I?

Jewellery: A lot of jewellery (unless you buy the good quality of course), are made with nickel, or a similar alloy - in fact, you’d be surprised just how many things are made of it. I’m pretty strongly allergic to this metal (not as uncommon as you’d think - PaganX also shares the same affliction), so this limits my jewellery wearing. Unfortunately I happen to LOVE jewellery, so that left me in a bit of a bind. Being the craft nerd that I am, however, meant that I simply side step the issue and make my own. In fact, most of my jewellery is either wooden (I have a lot of wooden bangles), or are made myself from glass beads, cotton, or polymer clay.

Knitting: Confess Lisa, you just wanted shiny yarn photos. I love knitting - though I don’t have the time for it that I would like. Unlike crocheting, which my grandmother taught me when I was about seven, I’ve only been knitting for about five years. I remember trying to teach myself and, when I kept dropping my needles, running next door to my (other) grandmother and insisting she sort me out. Since then I’ve developed a fondness for socks and lace (tiny yarn, tiny needles - I’m a masochist), but am not adverse to a good bout of cabling now and then.

Sci-fi: I love sci-fi. What more do I need to say? I love science fiction because it sets out to project both the hopes and dreams of a society, as well as its fears. It’s uniquely placed within the intersecting realms of entertainment and edification that it is able to critique the world without fear of condemnation. It’s just such a wonderfully intelligent, thoughtful, and wholly amazing genre.

DS9: Star Trek Voyager was my first love, it was, in fact, my only sci-fi for many years. It wasn’t until I made my first sci-fi friend completely by accident (he was the new kid in the grade above me, I was assigned to show him around, he lived near me, we walked home together. He made a Star Trek reference, I was amazed) that I moved on to DS9, his show of choice. It pains me to admit it, with my allegiance to Voyager, but Deep Space 9 is much better written than Voyager - or even TNG. It has actual story arcs that last for more than two episodes. The best part about the show, however? Discussing it on the way home from school with Adam.
