Our first adults-only Disney trip, which sounds sexier than it was. The victims were me and Bill, Eileen and her friend Jackie.
2:30 a.m. came early and our limo was prompt. We enjoyed our limo ride and arrived at the airport in plenty of time.
We made it through security, but not before they confiscated our juice cans in our Lunchables. I had forgotten about them. Ugh.
We were the first ones to the gate and we both had A passes, so we were going to be fine. Eileen and Jackie arrived with about 30 minutes to spare. Eileen came up to the gate first and I said, "Where's Jackie?"
"Isn't she with you?" Eileen quipped at 6 in the morning. The look of horror on my face proved to her that she had indeed fooled me and Jackie was behind her.
We met Jackie and had a nice visit. I gave them their ponchos, drink tickets and laminated miniature schedules.
Our flight was uneventful. I finished my Augusten Burroughs book.
We had a smooth landing and Ed was waiting for us, which was so nice. We got our luggage and away we went.
Ed made a grocery stop for us and even pointed out some sales. We all agonized cereal and alcohol decisions, and everybody kept getting separated. We ended up with 2 boxes of cereal for 4 breakfasts, just for me and Bill.
We arrived at The Grand Floridian and were greeted warmly. Upon check-in, we learned that we would be in a newly-renovated room and we would be the first ones in it. We also learned it wasn't ready, so we decided to store our luggage and head to the parks.
"Do you have your park ticket?" I asked Eileen, as she could add it to her room key for convenience.
"Park ticket? No." she calmly replied. Jackie chimed in: "I don't have mine either."
"What?!?!" I calmly said. I thought it was another joke.
Nope. Neither of them had their tickets and they looked to me: "What do we do?"
Plan B was to buy new tickets and sell the old.
Plan A was to call Mom for the phone number for Undercover Tourist to see if they could help.
It took me 2 tries to get the number and I finally got through. The very nice woman located our order quickly and said she'd fax over the info we'd need to get new tickets. Whew!
We had the fax within 15 minutes and had the concierge add their tickets to their room keys. The concierge also gave "Happy Birthday" buttons to Bill and Eileen, which they wore for 3 days straight.
Eileen and Jackie properly conceded that I had saved the day.
We took the bus to MGM and headed straight for Muppets 3-D. We enjoyed that.
While we were in the gift shop, the Cast Member asked if it was Bill's birthday and I said yes. He asked what Bill did and I told him he was a doctor. He said there was a message for Bill on the phone and I tried to backtrack, saying the hospital would page him if they needed him. And I began to wonder who knew we were here. Finally the CM gave me a look and handed the phone to Bill, which was a message from Goofy wishing him a happy birthday. Eileen got the same message and we had quite the laugh about it.
Next was lunch at the 50s Prime Time Cafe, where you pay to have waiters and waitresses abuse you. Alas, we got a non-abusive waitress so I felt gypped again. The food was so-so, and was promptly taken off our restaurant list.
It was getting hot, but the hotel hadn't called to say our room was ready yet, so we plodded on. We went on the Backlot Tour, which lasted 45 minutes. Then we went to the Behind the Scenes of The Chronicles of Narnia, which turned out to be a 15-minute air-conditioned commercial for the movie. Oh well.
We decided to head back to the GF via Wilderness Lodge since we had a little time to kill and I wanted Eileen to see the WL. We took a bus to the WL and had to wait at least 30 minutes for it.
Ah, Home Sweet Home and Bill went and bought 4 waters at the gift shop for us. We enjoyed the lobby and then Eileen and I hit the gift shop. She bought a nightshirt and a jacket for a hotel that she never stayed at.
We decided to take the boat to the Contemporary and hop the monorail to our resort. We had to take the second boat because all kinds of kids were going to the Halloween party at the Magic Kingdom. We finally made it to the Contemporary and rode the Monorail to our resort. We ended up using 10 different modes of transportation today. It was a little insane.
Our rooms were finally ready and we headed up to them. They were very frilly and fancy, and the view from our balcony was amazing. We could see the Magic Kingdom, The Contemporary and the Wilderness Lodge. Bill's birthday cake arrived with enough plates and forks to last our entire stay. He really loved his cake and it was delicious. Eileen and Jackie's cake had not arrived yet, which ticked me off.
Eileen and Jackie decided not to join us for dinner, so Bill and I headed back to MGM for dinner at The Brown Derby.
Am I ever glad we did! It was the best filet mignon I've ever had and the atmosphere was really neat. I immediately regretted not eating here before. We had great service and a great meal.
We went back to the GF and watched the Electric Water Pageant and the Halloween fireworks at the Magic Kingdom. I thought it was all cool as hell. The EWP was very loud and woke Jackie and Eileen up. It was a nice ending to a crazy day.
