OK, let me first of all say that I was away on my actual birthday (last Tuesday) for work. So I had a family dinner and drinks last Saturday, as this Saturday was Drew's 21st and of course that was way more momentous than my birthday! It was very fun, I had a great time and caught up with lots of people. I never feel like I really get to talk to anyone properly at those things though. Anyway, because I was away on my birthday, Derek promised to take me out to dinner to celebrate when I returned home on Thursday. I knew he was a bit unsure about where to take me as he thought I was really fussy and wanted me to have an awesome time, and that he was asking advice from people I knew. Which was really sweet, so while on one hand I wanted to know what was going to happen, on the other I kinda just wanted a nice surprise.
While I was away he texted me to tell me 'don't forget to bring your togs', which really got my curiousity high! We had both taken the Friday off and agreed to have a lazy day together, so I was prepared for an overnight stay of course, but togs was kinda interesting. I tried to use this to leverage more information with messages such as 'I've never worn my togs out to dinner before', but no deal. So, when I returned from Christchurch I was really excited, and I duly packed my bags and dressed 'casual' as requested, and waited to be picked up.
we drove off up the North Western motorway, and at this stage our conversations had led me to believe I was staying away overnight, so I was really wondering where, especially given the casual dress. Derek tried to lead me down the track of having got my mother to pack a bag for me with dressy clothes, but I didn't really believe him. I guess I was kinda thinking we might arrive somewhere where we would have a specially prepared meal or something so we wouldn't be in a restaurant and it wouldn't matter what I was wearing. But going north-west? Weird... Anyway, we got stuck in a big queue of traffic just out of Kumeu so he turned around, and headed through Riverhead instead, going across to traveling North. 'Hah' I thought, 'we're going back to the nice place in Mangawhai! Cool!', but then thought about the time and changed my mind. We would be getting there quite late. Where were we headed? I was pretty excited at this point.
Anyway, we came out in Orewa, which was funny because I could have sworn we would be further north than that, and through to Waiwera. I joked to Derek that he'd got me to pack my togs so we could go to the pools, and then he turned in to the road to go there! I was really confused, thinking he was just tricking me into thinking we were going there to take me on a wild goose chase. We drove past the pools however, and the large funbus of people piling out, and out to a reserve by the beach, which I didn't even know existed. We parked, and got out of the car at 'Destination 1'. Derek opened the boot to reveal a beautifully packaged picnic dinner from Rocket Kitchen. I was kinda blown away at this point, didn't know what to say. We sat on the grass eating our gourmet dinner, supremely happy.
I will reveal all about Destination 2 at another time as I'm just a little busy at the moment.
