ugh... finally.... renewing the NIE
OK, so after much calling, emailing, and googling, I finally have it down:
1. I have set up an appointment to renew my Número de Identificación Extranjero or NIE, which I finally figured out needs to be done in Madrid. Good.
2. My NIE expires at the end of this month, but as long as I bring in the document showing that it was BEFORE the expiration date that I made the renewal appointment, it's fine.
3. I'll come by the Madrid educacion office to pick up my papers, which I will need for my appointment.
The appointment is 21 September, by the way.
The people in the Madrid educacion office were nice. I asked if they knew where in Madrid I'm going to be placed and they said not yet-- it's done totally "at random". Haha, so much for the question on the application about whether you want to live in a small/large area! But I figure even if I'm in a pueblo in Madrid, Madrid the Autonomous Community is really not that big so I can still enjoy Madrid the city whenever I want. Maybe being in a pueblo would be good- probably less expensive than living in downtown Madrid.
