This was another good week examining the intricate world of Shakespeare. I really enjoyed looking at the different responses people had to Ariel’s speech in scene 5.1, and Prospero’s rare moment of emotion in the lines “Why, that’s why dainty Ariel! I shall miss thee, but yet thou shalt have freedom”
I thought it was very interesting that while Ariel is singing his ‘song’, he uses lots of metaphor and imagery to connect himself to nature ‘where the bee sucks, there suck I” and “On the bats back I do fly”, but he is also dressing Prospero in civilized clothes so he may take his place as the Duke of Milan. I thought this was a great way for Shakespeare to create that juxtaposition between the mythical, natural world of the island where Ariel belongs, and the mortal, material world of Milan where Prospero belongs. But just after Shakespeare creates this contrast between the characters, he has Prospero momentarily close that gap by admitting his affection for the fairy/spirit, and shows that the world of the imagination can have a place in the heart those who belong of the mortal, material world (like Shakespeare’s audiences). Well, that’s what I got from reading it anyway.
I then went onto Google to see some of the different representations of Ariel, because i was quite suprised to see the way he was characterised in the video we watched- all covered in gold. I imagined him to be human in colour, with with more leaves attached to his body etc. I was very suprised with some of the ways directors have 'dressed' Ariel
This Ariel scares me. I dont think he is childlike or spirit like at all.
This is more like 'my' Ariel, but i may have even put a mask on him, to add to that mystical, magical element. And some fake leaves in a wreath on his head! Yes, that is how I would dress 'my' Ariel.
So for my creative entry this week I am once again stealing something from my common place book. I started writing about something I was craving, and realised I might be able to do something a bit different if I tried to make every line start with the same letter. I’m pretty happy with the way it turned out, but I’d still appreciate any constructive criticism.
(P.s.- I was going to say what the subject of the poem is, but I think its better if I don’t and then you can apply it to whatever personal reaction you get from it. Hope you enjoy!”
I need it now
Tick Tock
Time counts down
Too long since I’ve satisfied
This craving
Though it’s crazy, I can’t help it
Total addiction has
Taken over. People
Tisk and shake
Their heads.
They don’t understand. I
Try to explain, but fail.
There is no justification.
Temptation
Teasing me with memories
Till I return
Then I leave and it starts again
Taunting me again
Too soon.
Trivial in the grand scheme
Terribly important to me
Trapped in this class
Tense, I check the clock
Too little time has passed.
Too much time to go
I need it now.
This week I commented on Rebecca’s entry for week 10.
http://beckyluvsty.livejournal.com/19723.html?view=29451#t29451 This is what I said
Hey Rebecca
I looooooved your drawing! It caught my eye as I was scanning down the friends page and I just had to stop by to tell you how cute I thought it was.
After I looked at the picture, I went on to read what you had written, and I have to say, I agree! Im not the biggest fan of burping alphabet music personally, but I can see the point your making! Ill often think about that when Im out in a club and the house 'music' is pumping and it just sounds like robots having a hissy fit. Ill stop and think "I have no idea how people can like this- but I guess anything counts as 'music'"
Great entry!

Ok, that’s it for me for this week. Now I have to go do assignments I could care less about, when I would much rather stay here and look at my friends musings on the literature and stories we all get to share together.
Is it strange to both love and hate uni at the same time?
Bec xoxo
