Okay, so I've been ruminating on this idea for about a year now, but only recently started fleshing it out. Since I'm not very good with beginnings or endings, my plan is to dive right into writing and edit later, once I have all my thoughts down.
My idea is this: Take the lyrics from Wicked, the Musical, and formulate a Harry Potter plot out of it, with the main pairings being Harry/Severus and a shallow, initial, Draco/Pansy, which morphs into the more satisfying Hermione/Draco. Harry/Snape is the big one though.
I want it to be a long piece of fiction that I put lots of time and care into writing, and I want the plot to be believable, mostly canon, quirky, and contain elements of J K Rowling's complex wizarding world and a few of my own as well. The story will probably have one or two sex scenes, but I want it to be primarily a romance between Harry and Severus.
In considering authoring this novella, I've wondered to myself: "What is it that makes any HP/SS story really good? As in, amazingly, smashingly satisfying to read?" For me, a superb fic is one that is believable and in-character; if it has original circumstances and sticks to Harry and Snape's true personalities, and if it keeps the reader guessing.
The story would not be HBP or DH compliant, but it may mention some of the characters or wizarding concepts from those books.
For now what I've been doing is taking each song from Wicked that I plan to use, and meshing it with various scenes from my plot line. Below are songs I'm using, not necessarily in the order I will put them in the story:
No One Mourns The Wicked: This song is from the opening scene of the musical Wicked. The musical starts at the end of the story of The Wicked Witch of the West, then flashes back to the beginning of Elphaba's life to show how the characters got where they were in NOMTW. In my story, the scene using this song will probably be centered around Voldemort's death. It might be post-second war, but it might also be post-first war, at about the time of the first chapter in Philosopher's Stone.
Wizard And I: After juggling plot threads around a bit, I finally decided that this song would be sung by Draco, who is looking forward to joining Voldemort's ranks. For most of Draco's life, his Father has led him to believe that the Dark Lord has a Noble Purpose. But when Draco gets to actually meet the Dark Lord he is disillusioned. Hermione also plays a big role in forcing him to see things differently.
What Is This Feeling: I'm really looking forward to writing this scene, between Severus and Harry. In the beginning, something happens to make Harry and Snape become roomates. I'm thinking that this will be a result of a house unity project, but it probably will be more complex than that because if there's one cliche I'm completely tired of, it's the whole "Snape and Harry are forced to be together and fall in love." No. They may be forced to live close to each other, but I definitely don't want that to be the reason they fall in love.
Thank Goodness!: Ginny is Glinda, Harry is Fiyero, Ron is Madame Morrible, Fudge is the Wizard of Oz, and Snape gets to play the "wicked witch". The song takes place in Gryffindor tower. Ginny is sitting with Harry on a couch and is surrounded by admiring gryffindors. They are talking about a mishap at the ministry involving Ginny, Snape, and Fudge. The tale of the Mishap, of course, has been highly fabricated with quite a few details corrupted by Ron, Ginny and Neville, so that by the time Ginny and Ron sing about it, there is almost no truth to it left, and makes Snape out to be some sort of villain.
Dancing through Life: This is going to be extremely difficult to write because of how many specific situations mentioned in the song, and also because of its sheer length. However, it's simply too good of a plot tool to pass up. Draco is Fiyero, and Pansy and Lavender each take their turn being Galinda. This song is part of the big Contrast, and shows how Draco is at the beginning of the story.
Popular: Ah, this was fun to write! It was the first scene I attempted. Since I wrote it all by itself, it will likely be heavily altered once I attempt to fit it into the larger plot line, but I'll post it after this post along with I'm Not That Girl, in case anyone feels like reading it. A funny scene in which Lavender gives Snape an involuntary make over.
I'm Not That Girl: Short, but I had a good time writing it. Snape laments that he can never be what Harry wants, because he is convinced that Harry is in love with Ginny. A lot of self-hate in this song. Very sad too. I reccomend that readers listen to the song from the Original Wicked Soundtrack while reading the piece; it adds a lot of depth to the scene.
As Long As You're Mine: Can't wait to write this. This is the first scene I'm going to write involving pure Snape on Harry action, in which the two characters finally relieve the tension! Some angst involved, but I'm hoping this will turn out as powerful as it needs to be.
No Good Deed: Ahh! Harry! After getting captured and delivered to an unplottable location, Snape becomes frantic back at hogwarts, and attempts to cast a Dark Magic long distance spell on Harry to protect him where ever he is. I'm also going to have lots of fun with this one. Angst Angst Angst!
Defying Gravity: Draco rejects Voldemort! Pansy begs him to reconsider! Draco Invites Pansy to run away with him! Pansy declines! Draco then retreats to Hogwarts and Dumbledore. This promises to be a really great scene.
For Good: This song always makes me cry! This is a pure Draco and Hermione scene. Draco and Hermione part because Hermione needs to go with Harry on a dangerous order mission, and Draco needs to stay hidden from Voldemort. Hermione isn't sure if she's ever coming back, and she heads down to the dungeon to say good bye to Draco.
