It was a busy weekend around here. On Saturday afternoon, Sara and I went over to our neighbor's house for her birthday party. Linda has been such a sweet neighbor to us ever since we moved to this address, and she just turned 80!!! Sara and I arrived a little later and wound up squished into a corner to sit (which was awkward), but her house was very nice and so fancily decorated. There was a giant balloon arch over the fireplace that might've had 80 balloons in it, and Linda wore a tiara and sash with 80 and Fabulous on it. I think Abby was excited to see me in her house instead of through the backyard fence.
On Saturday evening, we shopped and cleaned house to get ready for... THE OSCARS! The Oscars aren't just an award show in this house. They are an Event. Sara is obsessed with them. She got out all our old Oscar issues of People magazines (we have several of them going back to 2010, although not every single year since then) and talked nonstop about what foods we should get to eat during the show. She changed our TV settings to network TV (which we almost never watch anymore) on Sunday before the show and freaked out when she realized that our remote needed new batteries.
We wound up getting/making meatballs, sweet potato fries, fruit salad, a cookie cake, our favorite cheese dip, and wine. It was all soooo yummy. But even better than the food was that Athena was there to watch it with us!!! We hadn't seen her in way too long. She's living in north Louisiana now, and she drove a long way just to watch the show with us. It was so fun. I printed out Oscar ballots for all of us to vote, which we usually do, and I also found something new, an Oscar bingo game. Some of the things on it were specific, like "Collin Farrell wins Best Actor," and some were generic, like "Winner cries" and "Car commercial airs" (we saw both more than once). My idea was that since Sara always wins the ballot, maybe someone else could beat her at bingo. But then she wound up winning that, too! Athena had a spot on her bingo that said "Winner forgets to thank somebody," and she got a little obsessed with watching for that one all night. A few show highlights:
I've loved The Goonies since I was a kid, so Ke Huy Quan winning was a highlight of the night for me. I thought he and Brendan Fraser both gave very heartfelt acceptance speeches. There was a funny moment when I referred to Ke by his Goonies name, Data, and Athena got confused, thinking I meant the other Data, Brent Spiner. Although what made me laugh the hardest was when Sara said something with her mouth full of food, and Athena translated it for me.
Sara: "See, Athena understood me."
Athena: "I have a two year old."
Rebecca: *dies laughing*
We loved seeing all the fashion, and we made fun of Rooney Mara (who always looks a fright) and agreed that Florence Pugh was definitely the worst dressed this year. I laughed at Harrison Ford presenting Best Picture because he seemed so old and tired and ready to fall asleep right there. I loved the show, but mostly loved watching it with them. The only nominated movies I saw this year were The Banshees of Inisherin, The Fabelmans (at a potluck dinner and movie event at my temple; it was mediocre, but I had to see it because Tony Kushner), and My Year of Dicks.
Going back to work on Monday after Oscars Sunday is always pretty grueling for me. The
last time Athena watched it with us, she was pregnant with Lydia and spent the night here, and Sara and I both took off work the next day. I wish I had planned things better this year, but oh, well. I ate stayed up too late and ate too much cookie cake, which made it harder when I finally tried to go to sleep, and the clocks leaping forward two days ago made it all even worse. I was tired and cranky all day at work today, and my coworker C---- is really grating on my nerves. Today he looked right at my leftover fruit salad, said, "There's nothing but pure crap in that," then claimed to be talking to himself. Meanwhile he is diabetic and eats so unhealthy that I'm not sure how he's even still alive.
