Sara and I drove down to visit Athena and her kids today. They now live two hours away, so it is a long haul of a day to see them, but it is worth it. It was a really nice day. Aunt Connie was there visiting from SC, too. She treated us to pizza and watermelon, and I brought Green Glop (and pretty much ate it all myself), and we caught up with her while we ate.

After lunch, we went swimming. Athena has befriended an older lady in her neighborhood (Miss Jan) with a really nice backyard pool. There are lounge chairs and a picnic table area and cute decorative signs and always good music playing from somewhere. Abram had a water gun that kept us all amused for a long time. He, Sara, and I took turns sneaking up on each other and shooting each other. We nitpicked the inaccuracies on a blow-up globe. I pretended that I was competing in swimming challenges on Survivor. At one point, Abram grabbed onto my back, and I pretended to try throwing him off. He still refuses to go underwater or jump into the pool, but Lydia is fearless. She’ll jump right in the water with her little puddle-jumper. Athena made her wear a hat so her face didn’t get sunburned, and she was not happy about it, which was pretty funny. (It was actually one of the hats I bought her when she was born 13 months ago, and it’s still too big!)

When we got back home and dried off, we all played Abram’s game “Headbandz,” a guessing game about various things. Abram was a bit too young for it - he kept blurting out, “You’re a turkey!” etc. - but the rest of us laughed so hard we almost cried. Some lines to remember: “When have you ever been on a surfboard?” and “WE CAN’T COOK A STEW!” On the way home, we stopped at a Dairy Queen for a snack. Sara got onion rings and a blizzard, and I got cheese-and-bacon fries, and the long, golden summer sunlight hours lasted for the entire ride home. I wish it could’ve lasted forever. Why do the short, cold, dark winter days have to come again in a few months? Why do those kids have to grow up someday? But nothing that happens next will ever change how much fun today was.
