Happy Mardi Gras! Obviously this Jewish girl doesn’t even live in Louisiana anymore, so Mardi Gras doesn’t mean much to me now. But Athena and Abram came over last weekend, and we started reminiscing about the children’s parade in our hometown, and it was enough to make me feel nostalgic. Grandma and Aunt Carla used to take all the local grandkids to that parade every year, always to the same spot on the route (the grassy area in front of the church on E Street). Then we’d go back to Grandma’s house to organize our loot and swap candy. So many fun memories. Athena and I both agreed that it really ruined all other parades for us.
I went to the gas station down the street for lunch today, because I’m thinking about giving up eating out for Lent. Of course I’m not Catholic, but I do need to stop eating out so much, and it’s always good to practice some self-discipline. So my goal for Lent (the forty days from Mardi Gras to Easter) is to eat out for only one meal a week, which will be on Saturdays with my sister. (We religiously go out to eat and then to the library every Saturday.) This will get more challenging as the weather warms up (if it ever does - still cold enough right now that I’m living in my coat, hat, and long underwear) and I want to leave my job at lunch more often, but surely I can make it for forty days, right? We’ll see. I might try doing a bread-fast for Passover again this year, too.
Mom and Aunt Connie are planning to come visit this weekend, and Mom has mentioned wanting to stay with us, not at a hotel. I don’t think I would mind this so much if it weren’t still cold here. Cold weather just stresses me out, and so does she. UGH.
