The things that come back to us late at night...

Last night, Sara came into my room as I was about to go to bed and said: Do you remember this book we had when we were kids? [She summarizes a story about a girl searching for her long-lost dog, along with a side character who was a professional candle-maker. I don't remember that bit at all, but I do recall the book.] What was that book called?
Me: Um, it was called... huh, I can't remember.
Sara: Me neither! It's been driving me crazy.
Me: You had an old paperback of it. I can still see that cover. I can't remember the title, but I can see it.
[We start talking over each other.]
The girl had dark hair.
She was wearing a yellow shirt.
She was holding the dog in her lap.
It was a little black dog.
A Scotty.
She sitting on the grass.
In front of an animal shelter.
Was the dog's name the title of the book?
Uh, Rags? Scrappy? Something short.
Something cutesy.
The author's name was... Marilyn something? Sacks? Sacker?

After a bit of googling (because now I won't sleep until I remember that book's title)...

P.S. The dog in question was actually named Gus. I really remembered it as Rags.

childhood, books, my sister is crazy, random
