Whew, 2013 is over! Don't get me wrong, this has been a very GOOD year, but it's also been very BIG and busy and overwhelming. We moved to big city in a different state and had to adjust to living in a part of the country with hills and seasons. I joined a way bigger temple and met a ton of new people. I got a new job, and I still feel like I don't quite have my feet under me yet. We got a second cat, and she and Tovah still haven't stopped hissing at each other! I saw a real snowfall for the first time in my life and celebrated "Thanksgivukkah" for the only time in my life.
Moving was stressful (we did it all by ourselves!) and
saying goodbye was hard, but I thank God every day that I moved out of my hometown. I was so miserable there for a very long time, in a way that I didn't even fully realize until I left. I mean, there are no words for what a relief it's been to not hear "You do what?" and "Why do you work there?" from people at temple when they ask what I do (which is what I used to hear working retail in my hometown), to not constantly run into busybodies who know my family, to actually be able to get a good job by my own merit without being endlessly rejected because the town is overrun with nepotism, sexism, and snobbery (UGH). But in the words of the Newsies:
Where does it say you gotta live and die here?
Where does it say a guy can't catch a break?
Why should you only take what you're given?
Why should you spend your whole life livin' trapped where there ain't no future, even at 17?
Breakin' your back for someone else's sake
If the life don't seem to suit you,
How 'bout a change of scene, far from the lousy headlines and the deadlines inbetween?
My hope for 2014 is that it will be just as good, and maybe, a little less busy. And here's my first-sentence roundup for 2013!
