Thankful Thursday: Goodbye, apartment 44, hello, apartment 181!

Re-entry to work hasn't been fun, of course, but at least I don't have to master a whole new job right away. I think it will be easier after I get more comfortable around the people I work with. I do miss some of my old coworkers. After work this evening, I put the finishing touches on my new bedroom. It's a lot smaller than my last room, but there's still so much to be thankful for here. This is a long post.

The new city. As a girl who's lived virtually her entire life in flat-as-a-pancake Louisiana, I can't get over how hilly it is here. Just the grounds of our apartment complex is quite hilly. And while it's been a bit difficult to drive in - Muse Watson has never been a fan of inclines - it makes for some very scenic views, too. So far, it's also been a nice change to live in a bigger city. Our apartment is in such an ideal location; there are so many stores, restaurants, and businesses just down the street in one direction, and in the other direction is a quiet residential neighborhood where I hope to go bike-riding this weekend.

Our new apartment complex. As they say in The Princess Bride, we're “living like kings in Patagonia!” The complex is very big, so there's probably noise in other areas, but we're lucky to live on the edge of it, as far as you can get from the parking lot, and our windows overlook a peaceful, grassy area. I can't get over how quiet it is here. The landlords actually seem to care about the residents, the maintenance staff does their jobs, there are amenities like a really well-maintained swimming pool, tennis court, and playground, and there's a drainage ditch snaking through the grounds that becomes the most picturesque babbling brook in rainy weather. I hope to take pictures eventually, but I know I could never do it justice.

Our new apartment. Probably more than anything else, I'm still in the honeymoon period with this apartment. I still look around and can't believe we actually live here. This has to be the nicest apartment we've ever had, and it's also our first on the ground floor. We have several things here that we've never had before: a dining room table (we've never had room for one before - it was a housewarming gift from our mom), our own washer and drier, a doorbell, and digital cable with channels that show Who's the Boss? and The Golden Girls! I'm a geek for being so excited by that, I know.

We didn't overspend decorating the place, but we did find some great deals at the Dollar Store and Goodwill: a framed print of Van Gogh's Roses (I love it because it matches the framed print of Van Gogh's View of Arles with Irises that we've had for a long time), a new couch (it's big and sturdy enough for us to flop down on, but light enough for us to move by ourselves!), beautiful blue curtains for the living room, and a big canvas print of the Paris skyline that I just hung on the wall over my bed.

In the words of Who's the Boss's theme song:
There's a path you take and a path not taken
The choice is up to you, my friend
The nights are long, but you might awaken
To a brand-new life (brand-new life, brand-new life!) around the bend
