There was new episode of NCIS tonight -- finally! It was the first new episode of 2011, and it was a great one! What better way to kick off the new year?
Notes on episode 8x11 Ships in the Night
Featuring CGCIS Agent Abby Borin, last seen in Jurisdiction
Writers: Reed Steiner (
Royals and Loyals) & Christoper J. Waild (
Dead Air)
+/- Agent Borin suggesting that she jump overboard to escape her obnoxious blind date. I didn't think that dress was a very flattering choice for Diane Neal, though.
- Tony complaining that he wished he were leaving a bar with a beautiful woman whose name he didn't know instead of working late. What happened in the very last episode,
False Witness? Oh yeah, Tony found out that a woman he'd had a one-night stand with had tried to kill herself, and he tried to act more like a mature adult and less like a frat boy. Ziva seemed as disappointed in Tony as I was in the writers. False Witness aired less than a month ago! Why do they already have to act like it never happened? Or maybe they weren't even aware of it! It wouldn't surprise me if the writers didn't even watch each others' episodes anymore. It reminded me of the complete turn-around Gibbs did back in
Royals and Loyals.
+ "Think of all the women I could've dated. Respectfully dated." Yeah, it was nice of you guys to add that in, but it was too little, too late for me.
+ So, Ziva's traveling to visit the friend she met in Miami again (she mentioned in False Witness that she was going on a ski-trip with him). Notice how she's stopped denying that he's her boyfriend. I'm getting tired of talk of this guy, but I should reserve judgement for when we actually meet him. Man, I hope the writers don't make him evil.
+ I really liked how much of the episode was set on the ship were Nolan was murdered. It gave the episode a very unique feel to have such a different crime scene.
+ Gibbs and Borin's first meeting on the boat. I liked them arguing over the jurisdiction of the case (again) and him giving her a change of clothes and her continuing their conversation while she changed was just the right dose of something sexy and flirtatious between them.
- Tony's speech to the ship passengers stuck on board started out with some genuinely funny stuff ("Consider it your murder mystery dinner theater" - I would've laughed at that!) and moved right into stupid, ridiculous territory. I'm so tired of the writers overplaying Tony for laughs like this. It's not funny, it's just painful! Ugh!
+ "All the good ones are taken." "Or dead." "Yeah, that's what I meant." Haha. Gibbs and Borin have such good chemistry together. It was great to see her again.
+ Finding out that Nolan was both rich and famous. Now things are getting juicy.
+ I loved the scene with McGee, Gibbs, and Borin doing detective work on the ship. I lol'ed at poor overworked McGee falling asleep on the couch (mean, but also kinda funny), Gibbs describing himself as peppy and misunderstanding "viral," and McGee offering to show them Kimberly's sex tapes. Haha!
+ The looks on Borin's and Ziva's faces when she ran into Mehlman again. Borin looked so horrified, and Ziva was very obviously amused.
+ Tony interrogating Fisher. Nice to finally see these writers treat him decently.
- Gibbs telling Abby that she was the NCIS mascot was kinda weird, in a sweet way.
+ Loved the scene with McGee and Borin in the bullpen, especially him offering her a Nutter Butter (awww) and saying that Gibbs has no friends ("Maybe Mike Franks or Fornell"). I can't remember if we already knew from Jurisdiction that Borin has her own set of Gibbs-like rules, but it was nice to find out that her #1 is "Never make excuses."
+ "Can we discuss your package another time, Tony?" Loved the look Ziva gave him when she said that. I also loved how she gave him a pen when he couldn't find one while they were interviewing Adams. It felt very sweet to me, without being Tiva.
+ The scene between Gibbs, Abby, and Borin in her lab was so cute. I especially loved how impressed Abby was in how quickly Borin identified the ship, and Gibbs calling them "Abbses."
+ Ooh, there was a second body in the water -- another juicy little twist.
+ Borin taking over McGee's report in the bullpen.
+ Ziva and Tony getting to kick some ass in the club! It's been too long since they had a good action scene (I'm not counting Ziva's recent cat fight in
Enemies Domestic, because that left a bad taste in everyone's mouth). It reminded me of their bar fight back in Faith.
+ Gibbs and Borin sweating out all the suspects in the board room. The episode really did start to feel like Clue there.
+ The final scene in the bullpen was really good: the team finally got to go home and sleep, Tony decided not to take any time off, and Gibbs added the photo of Nolan on the wall behind his desk (answering Borin's earlier question to McGee about that wall of photos). It was a nice patriotic ending note.
