Precipice: Reflections on the Grand Canyon

Nov 11, 2006 18:00

After our trip to the Grand Canyon this summer, I've been wanting to write a poem about it. The trip occurred just after I found out one of my dearest friends lost her battle with cancer. It was the perfect time to experience the GC. After spending the weekend celebrating the wedding of two dear friends, the GC really summed up life in its entirety. Sometimes you are the valley and sometimes you are the mesa. I'm quite sure that the Grand Canyon is my favorite place in the world to date.

PRECIPICE

Here I stand
Small, insignificant creature
Witness to the majesty of creation.

If I jumped,
I would fly.
Like the condor doomed to extinction
but reborn.

I am at once aware of
descent
ascent
purpose and depth.

I crumple my ego
like a piece of paper.
And hurl it over
Into the great unknown.
