I've just posted this to tumblr so I thought I'd stick it up here as well. I'll get to details about actually meeting Mister Morgan in person in a different post, when it isn't eleven at night. :D
Right, so since I still haven’t watched the sixth episode, I’m going to make this a fairly rough, bullet-pointy summary of Colin’s Q + A so that I can go and watch it before I’m spoiled. I don’t know if anyone’s already done this or whether a video’s gone up (we were told no recordings, but I’m sure someone will have found a way) so I’m just going to go ahead and post this. :)
This will have Season 4 spoilers and speculation in it. It also has rather a lot of words. You have been warned.
So, the Q and A was brilliant, and here’s what I can remember from the moments when I wasn’t staring in awe at the glorious beauty that is Colin Morgan’s face. Those moments were, unfortunately, rather few.
- He said that there’s an iconic scene coming up that he really liked, involving something which has appeared before in the show but that he can’t mention. He said we could probably all guess what it was, though, and I’m almost certain we’re going to see Arthur pulling Excalibur out of the stone at some point in the not too distant future.
- One girl asked who sung You’re the Voice, to which he replied (correctly, for once) John Farnham, and then there was an actual ‘You’re The Voice’ singalong with everyone in the audience. For reals. It was amazing, and Colin looked like he was absolutely loving it, and he said that would be the memory he’d take away from Brisbane. It’s certainly the memory that I will. WELL DONE, FELLOW AUSSIE FANS, YOU’VE MADE ME PROUD TODAY. :D
- The episode he liked the most this season was Episode 9 - he said that’s one to look out for.
- He also said that the finale was brilliant, and especially the final scene - he said he isn’t sure where they’ll take it from there with next season, so I think it’ll be something pretty significant. It sounded alarmingly like it was going to be a cliffhanger sort of a thing. (Which I rather hope it won’t be, I’ve had enough of them with Sherlock). Could there be a magic reveal on the way, perhaps?
- He said he wasn’t aware of the anticipation by Merthur fans regarding the embrace, but, ah, he is now.
- A girl who looked about eight (or younger?) asked whether Colin and Katie were dating - he said that was a very sly question from someone so young, then said no, but he couldn’t really discuss it further. Which some Colin/Katie fans may take as a suggestion that there’s something going on there. I’d happily take it that way. :D
- The piggyback Arthur/Old Merlin scene had to be reshot several times - Colin mentioned something about encouraging Bradley, and Bradley having a bad back, and he said that he improvised the little kicks and the ‘faster’ parts.
- John Hurt doesn’t do any scenes with Colin and he doesn’t see what Merlin does with the dragon’s advice until he watches the episode, so Colin said he phones up afterwards and is all ‘why’d you do that, Colin, why didn’t you take my advice?’
- He was asked to do the dragonlord voice but said he’d deafen us all with it. Which is rather a shame. It’s a very delightful voice.
- He said that at the end of the day if Merlin doesn’t like the dragon’s advice he just does his own thing because Merlin’s the dragonlord and he’s got the power.
- One girl got up and asked Truth or Dare, to which he replied dare and got dared to do ten sit-ups. After which he proceeded to lie on his back on the stage, stick his knees in the air and do ten very enthusiastic sit-ups while we all counted.
- …His pants don’t look nearly as baggy when his legs are in the air. Just saying.
- One of the funniest moments on set, he said, was when Bradley’s horse sat down in the lake during one of the scenes and Colin was just sitting there laughing.
- The most embarrassing moments he’s had on set involve walking into things, especially one time he walked into a door and broke it. They got it on camera and showed it at the wrap party.
- His favourite theatre role was in Vernon God Little, and he said that the book on which it was based was very good and worth a read.
- He was asked what BBC show he’d like to be on if he wasn’t on Merlin, to which he mentioned a vampire one that has an f in it? I didn’t quite catch the name, but he said he’d like to be a vampire on that.
- He says he walks around with his Dragoon makeup half on and no wig and creeps people out. Well done, Colin.
- A girl got a text message in the middle of asking a question and Colin said that he wished it was a phone call. I think he’d have liked to hear the reaction when she told whoever called that she was talking to Colin Morgan. XD
- There are no video diaries this season, though he did mention interviews with really interesting questions which would be coming out - I think with the Season 4 DVD.
- He said that they were given cameras in Season 1 and they loved them and annoyed everyone because they were filming with them so much.
- Of all the creatures he’d be most scared of, he picked the Afanc, and also said that he wouldn’t like finding the Witchfinder under his bed.
- He said that getting a new horse is difficult because it tries to test you the whole time you’re riding it (this was said complete with some bucking actions and in a voice which was what I can only imagine was what he thinks an evil horse sounds like. Which is to say, rather hilarious.)
- He said that the spells are hard to learn because there’s no way to connect to them
- He said that his favourite guest stars were the man who plays the Witchfinder and the lady from Harry Potter because she was hilarious, and he said he’d quote her but it’d have to be heavily edited, which I take to mean that it was either filthy or expletive ridden. :D Either way, Colin said that she was absolutely hilarious, which might tell us something about his sense of humour.
- He said acting sort of ruins watching other movies for him because he’s sitting there going ‘oh, that’s a blue screen’ or ‘oh, he’s talking to a bucket’ rather than enjoying it. But he said there are some movies that draw him in because they’re just that good.
- He thinks the writers are going with the portrayal of Merlin as unlucky in love, though he said that personally, he’d like to have more love interests. :D
- He takes acting roles that he thinks ‘how on earth would I do this’ rather than ones where he’s like ‘yeah I can do that’ because he thinks complacency is the enemy and he likes to be challenged.
- He also takes roles if they really strike him and if everyone involved is passionate about it.
- If he wasn’t Merlin he’d want to be Gaius because - and I quote - he’s quite a ‘ladies’ man’ (the Gaius RP-er in me cried with laughter at that. So true, Colin, so true.) If not Gaius, then a knight, because he’d love to do some actual fighting. Or, ah, get some swordplay. I forget the actual way he phrased it. ;)
- He said Merlin would be a terrible knight, though, because he’d probably lop people’s limbs off with his loose sword action.
- They got cabin fever a bit while filming Midnight and ended up standing around laughing at things for twenty minutes straight. :D
- If he had three days to live before the moon hit the earth (some of these questions were reallycreative) he’d spend it having a private John Farnham concert with all of us Aussies in Brisbane. OH YEAH. :D Though I’m curious as to what his actual, serious answer to that question would be.
- The horse dung he fell in in an earlier season was made of Weetabix, chocolate, hair and hair gel. He also said we should try it at home.
- If he could keep (or steal) any props from the set he’d want to keep Balinor’s wooden dragon (aw!) and he got to keep Aithusa’s dragon egg. He joked about poaching or boiling or frying it. XD
- The most surreal moment of filming was when Gaius said ‘the king is dead’ in the episode where Uther dies, and that even though Tony Head was around on set for a month after that, it was that moment when they realised that it was actually happening and that Uther was gone.
- He also said Bradley was walking round with his crown on and Colin was all you’re king now and Bradley was like I know! (which he said in an excited sort of a tone. Hee.)
- His favourite scene of any of them was when the dragon burned Camelot in S2 - because, he joked, he hates Camelot.
- He says Catherine Tate is wonderful, that she’s funny and is really involved with her shows and that you’d have to admire anyone like that.
- He said that it’s more fun playing Old Merlin than Merlin.
- He said he’d always wanted to come to Australia, then thanked us all for coming at the end and said we’d exceeded expectations and represented Aussie fans brilliantly and we were all just so welcoming and lovely and COLIN HOW ARE YOU SO NICE?
- He hasn’t been asked to return as Jethro (I AM DISAPPOINT) but I mentioned that there were other guest characters who’d returned so, you know, the possibility is totally there.
- Also, I was getting a signature for my friend Anni and he called me a good friend. NAWW.
So basically, to sum it all up:
I’m tired, sore and sunburnt, I have You’re the Voice stuck in my head and a rather frightening photo of myself with Colin in my bag (my smile looks a tad terrified), but to be honest, I absolutely loved it. LOVED it. Colin is gorgeous and hilarious and lovely and tall and stubbly and Irish and I was pretty much clinging to the wonderful Jenny (mcmorgans on tumblr) by the end because COLIN MORGAN? WELL YEAH, HE’S BASICALLY PERFECTION.
Also, the camera I brought along was shockingly terrible, and we were only allowed to take photos for the first two minutes, but Jenny got some beautiful ones full of hands and face and neck and hair and face and limbs and did I mention face? So yes. I will link you all over there if/when she puts them up :)
So, ah, that was rather text-heavy. That’s all I’ve got for the moment. Goodnight, you all <3
