This weekend was fairly excellent! On Saturday I slept in a bit, enjoyed lunch with my dad, and then drove to Nova to see Jessica! She was staying the night at Jill Dietrick's house before going to Amherst via Amtrak on Sunday morning, and I decided to drive up to visit with her. It was wonderful to see her and hear about her exciting trip to Europe!
We woke up at 5:30 on Sunday morning so she could get to Union Station in plenty of time to catch her 7:30 train. I think that driving into (and out of) DC that early on a Sunday morning was an excellent First Try for me. The first time I drove into New York it was 6:00 on a Friday evening - this was much less stressful. There was hardly any traffic, and I didn't hit anyone when I accidentally drove straight through a red light!
This contributed to me making *excellent* time to Charlottesville (just over two hours from Union Station to Emmet & Ivy) even though it was raining. When I got to Charlottesville, though, I realized that I left my book at Jill's house (frown), so after finding three closed libraries (Alderman, Clemons, and the library downtown), I sat in front of the synagogue listening to NPR for 45 minutes. Then at 11:00, I had a meeting about my job this summer.
I'm really looking forward to working at Camp CBI. Most of each day will be pre-planned, and I'll be responsible mainly for attending to the transportation and safety of the students (I'll have 6-8 rising 2nd and 3rd graders at any given week). Almost every day, I'll be responsible for developing and overseeing a "group activity," so there will definitely be some "homework" involved, but I'm not too concerned (especially as Mom is an expert on this age group and has twenty-five tons of teaching materials in the basement). In order to simplify payment, I was informed that I would be receiving a flat rate for all my work at both before- and after-camp care as well as during camp hours (instead of a flat rate for before- and after-camp care in addition to a lump sum for the entire camp). I was hesitant at first, but after crunching the numbers when I got home, it turns out that this system makes me about $20 more per week, so I approve!
Anyway, the important thing is that I think I'm going to have a lot of fun this summer. I'm really looking forward to moving into the CHUVA house, and I think I'll feel welcome there. I'm super-excited about being somewhat on my own, getting myself up, driving myself to work, being responsible for my food, etc. There will be a fair number of people in Charlottesville (

The staff looks like loads of fun, and the head director is the previous executive director of UVA Hillel (her last year was the year before I came to UVA). Overall, it should be a good summer.
After camp ends, I plan on taking some sort of vacation (probably to a beach) with my family and Jessica - then perhaps some travel with Jessica before settling down in my apartment and moving on to City Year! But, one step at a time I suppose. :)
