I don't really cook, or bake, or do anything remotely domestic when I can help it. *cough* This is getting away from me. Where was I? Oh, my recipe for Egg Nog Trifle!
Marie's Egg Nog Trifle in Twelve Easy Steps
1. Prepare vanilla pudding or mousse from mix- replace the milk with egg nog. Allow to set.
2. Slice up and layer cake about an inch thick in the bottom of a trifle bowl. I usually buy or make a pound cake or yellow cake. This time I went with chocolate chip coffee cake because that's what Heinen's had. Pat cake flat with fingers.
3. Sprinkle cake with two teaspoons of rum.
4. Spoon egg nog mousse on top of cake - start in the center and nudge outward with your spoon to touch the sides evenly. Smooth to a height of about an inch and a half.
5. Take about a cup of sliced mixed fruit (strawberries and kiwis will make a nice red and green look for xmas) and layer on top of mousse. Set in the outside fruit first, alternating along the glass, then fill in lightly behind.
6. Cover fruit in whipped cream.
7. Layer more cake on top of cream - I used leftover chocolate cheesecake for this second layer.
8. Cover chocolate cheesecake with chocolate whipped cream (because I had it).
9. Cover chocolate whipped cream with another layer of coffee cake.
10. Drizzle caramel sauce on top layer of coffee cake.
11. Spoon remaining egg nog custard on to top. Sprinkle with freshly ground nutmeg and arrange another half cup of fresh fruit attractively on top.
12. Bask in the admiration of your friends for an elaborate dessert that involved no actual skill to make.
