It's National Poetry Month! Did you know that? I kinda did, because, like, I did that 'poem-a-day for April' a two years ago.
So I thought I should bring back Poetry Friday! It's been a while. Here it is, Friday, and a poem!
The Mermaids of Lake Erie
The mermaids of Lake Erie,
Unlike their tropical kin
With fins of gilt and copper,
Resemble shad and walleye:
A rainbow of grey and slate.
Between caramel waters
And the Euclid Bluestone sky
They ply Erie's modest waves,
Which caress their modest breasts,
And weave their plastic wristlets
From bottle caps and grocery bags.
The sailors do not seek them
From their ore boats on the lake.
Little girls gathering sea glass
Are their primary audience,
Cataloguers and betrayers.
Come leave the burning river,
Tie your hair with plastic twine,
Slip outside the breakwater,
And become one for a time.
