ReasieAs one who commutes by bike, I am constantly thinking about my place on the road - and how to not be in everyone's way. It is impossible to turn left with out upsetting someone - because most cars feel that you have no right to be in the road, much less going out into the middle of the road to turn left properly. (I have been yelled and honked at while turning left more than any other time while on my bike.)
I wondered to my husband if most motorists feel bikes belong on the sidewalk because most motorists don't ever USE the sidewalk. Is that a bit cynical on my part? Brian thinks so. All I know is, when I use the sidewalks to avoid upsetting the cars, I run into a very dangerous situation with pedestrians not seeing me or stepping into me when I alert them to my presence - and, of course, cars coming out of drives and parking lots hitting me or honking at me and generally - I am even MORE in the way.
BIKE LANES. We need bike lanes. Bikes don't mix well with pedestrians nor with traffic. Wouldn't it be swell to have our own little slice of road where we wouldn't feel always like an interloper?
*siiiigh* London had gorgeous bike lanes, and even merging lanes and bike right-turn lanes when a wide turn would take place. City planers - Look! Look! Make Cleveland look like this, please??
(Okay so probably not what you expected to cap off my series of posts on London, but really, the bike lanes impressed me.)
