Title: A Little Strange
Fandom: Reaper
Rating: PG
Summary: Set from Cady's perspective, her thoughts post "Cash Out".
Word Count: Short. (I'll get back to you on that)
Disclaimer: I don't own Reaper, but hell-- let the CW sue me! They could probably use the money.

I had completely forgotten how much I love Cady! And really, who doesn't love a psycho pretty girl. The supportive stuff Sam said to her at the end of the episode (slightly undercut by how he'd been trying to figure out if she really was "Jerry's" daughter most of the episode) was adorable, and I wish there'd been a little more time spent on how this particular relationship could have soured.  Sam Oliver,  you dodged one heck of a bullet.
Also, does anyone have the exact words of what Sam says to Cady? I approximated.

"You're not at all like him; you're funny, sweet, you love animals... There isn't a scrap of that guy's DNA in this hand, I'd stake my life on it."

Sam was amazing. The best boyfriend ever. So much better than her ex she wondered sometimes why she'd bothered. It was just... Something was a little off about him. Not that she was going to judge! She'd brought a dead goldfish on a date. In fact, she'd always been a little 'off' herself, and liked that Sam didn't seem to mind. Didn't look at her weird just for still having her ninja turtle dolls, didn't mind talking about her missing father, and was sweet enough that he didn't even ask her to take poor dead Walter off the bar table. And he was cute. And her mother adored him. Sam was the best boyfriend ever.

If his friends were a little weird, a little... close, she could totally understand that. Totally; it was practically the story of her life. Growing up with a mother who was trying to hang onto an on-again off-again "romance" for two decades had made her a little clingy too. She'd had plenty of relationships were common sense didn't exactly prevail... The nature of human beings was to take what they wanted and leave as soon as they could. Jerry had taught her that, either by word or example. So sometimes when she felt like people were taking what they wanted it stirred those old abandonment fears and she got a little crazy. 'Crazy Cady', they'd called her in Junior high. And then she showed them.

She giggled a little at the memory. Anyway, Sam would never do that. Sam was the sweetest, nicest guy she'd ever known. It was just... Like she said... He was a little weird. Or, more exactly, he seemed surrounded by weirdness. There was this bizarre energy around him, like the buzz in a room when the TV's still on but the screen's black. Nothing looks out of place, but you can almost sense it. And weird stuff always seemed to happen... Just tonight, she swore the flowers in the vase next to him were alive one minute and dead the next. Dogs would start barking then fall silent when he walked by... And she was almost certain that him just being nearby was enough to kill her cell phone battery.

That wasn't even mentioning Jerry being there, talking to him. It had been a relief that Sam didn't seem to so much as like the guy, but what had that been about? Sam had been distant the few times she tried to draw him out, to get him to talk about his parents... But so eager to talk to her about her messed-up situation... Was it even possible that Sam was Jerry's--

No. No way. "Totally gross." Cady laughed to herself as she flipped over a tarot card and placed it at the top of the chalk triangle drawn on her bedroom floor. It was just like Sam had said to her: Sam was funny, and sweet, and nice, and there for her. There wasn't a single thing he had in common -- no way could a guy like Sam have anything to do with a jerk like Jerry. Cady frowned, realizing she'd lost her train of thought; did she flip the card already or put it down straight? The Empress card stared up disapprovingly at her, and Cady shrugged. Why be a pessimist? The Empress card was in charge of new things; like a new romance, so the meaning was obvious. Cady hummed happily as she flipped over the other cards in the triangle, then frowned again at the corners. The Fool, and the Devil? What was that pairing supposed to mean?

The black candles in her room flickered as Cady sighed-- she'd never been very good at cards. Chicken bones were way easier; though it did make her feel a little guilty mixing Clint and Andy together like that. Without bothering to look at the connecting figures she picked up the cards and shuffled them back into the deck. Whatever, right? Sam was the best boyfriend, so what did it matter if he was a little weird? She liked guys who were a little weird. And Sam was so honest, he'd probably tell her what was up... when he felt ready to. Cady rolled her pink rug back over the chalk symbols on her floor, tucked her tarot cards back under the mattress, and pulled the Cosmo out of her bag. She blew out a few candles and flipped open to the relationship quiz, smiling to herself.

She couldn't wait to see Sam tomorrow.
