This is a new alltime low.
Woke up at 10 pm tonight after falling asleep at probably 1 pm. We're back from the U.S. since two weeks and still tick in pacific standard time - which turns life into hell, since there are no 24 hr shopping facilities here, since one of our neighbours is always noisily home improving something and every office with whom you might have to deal administrative things closes at 5 pm. We're being really unproductive and the pressure rises, since we really need to get our act together about our parisian projects. Sucks.
In the beginning we slept from 9 am to 9 pm. Then I thought drinking alcohol would put me to sleep earlier, so I fell asleep at 2am, only to wake up again at 5 or 6 am. Next time I'd fall asleep at noon and wake up at 6pm. This wasn't going anywhere, so I stopped drinking, for the alcohol not to mess with the sleep cycles any further. And since not drinking didn't improve anything either now it's time for sleeping pills - which I hate, because I distrust their effects and they turn me nauseous. The war against my neurotransmitters hits the next round.
But it's an alltime premier, too - for the first time ever I cut my hair by myself today, half orienting myself with mirrors, half proprioceptive, and it didn't turn out as bad as it could have, so I'm quite proud.
Other good news are that the hamsters are not pretending not to know us anymore, which is a relief.
The only thing we ever catch on the tv are the music videos on M6 - here in france the only things that musically sell (and are promoted) are shitty french pseudo-socially-critical rap, shitty french U.S.-rip-off-and-failing-at-it R'n'B, shitty french speaking reggae with guest rappers from third world countries for ethno credibility and something they call "folk punk" - when was the last time you saw Joey Ramone and Sid Vicious with a fiddle or an accordion ? Yep, me neither.
Newsflash buddies: bad teeth and sense of dressing, lame and uncreative songwriting combined with a general lack of control over your instruments doesn't make you punk yet !
But thanks god there is good music out there still:
Some good people linked to the new Primal Scream video
"Country Girl" - musically they seem to be back to the roots of their first album, aesthetically the video challenges "Smack my bitch up" in bad tastedness. And the great Bobby Gillespie wears a really extraordinary piece of clothing in here..can't wait til the album comes out.
Since I typed together their tourdates the other day I got rehooked on SHOOTSPEEDKILLLIGHT, which must be one of the greatest songs of all times, combined with the coolest song title ever. Everyone needs to listen to this song now and get permanently infected !! (as you can guess I somewhat prefer the EXTRMNTR period over their roots, but hey..)
Then there are the Yeah Yeah Yeahs - I finally got into them, yeah I know three years too late, but I like their new album with the silly , because easy to misunderstand and misinterpret title "Show your bone". I still prefer the first album and ordered their premier EP, so I'm looking forward to that. And seeing them live pretty soon in Paris. Maps is a truely beautiful song. The guitars are always screachy and great, but Karen O's vocals are slightly obnoxious...I just can't dig high pitched female whine..not in PJ, not in Karen O.
And I'm trying to check out TV on the radio open mindedly - I don't see what's supposed to be so brilliant about them, but they are not as bad as I remember them from when I saw them at Eurockeenes a few years back. If only they could get rid of these barber-shop vocals, they are nerve wrecking...
