I am freaking out so hard about money right now I could puke. I actually might. They put the new lease agreement in the mailbox today. $750.00 is about $50.00 more than I make in a two week paycheck. If I never eat again I might be able to do it. Or I could try hooking. Or crack sales. Just cruised everything on craigslist and there ARE no other ( Read more... )

You are going to be A-OK. You have been through way worse than this, and you worked it out and ruled it, and you will come out on top of this too. Because that is the kind of chick you are: the invincible kind. You're resilient and resourceful and a classy dame.

It does sound scary as hell though.

Something you might try (it never hurts to try) is to ask your landlord if they would give you a small rent rebate if you did some work for them. If the apartment is in a building, they might like to have another maintenance call person for little stuff (lightbulbs, lockouts, etc.). If the apartment is in a house they might LOVE to have someone fixing the place up and taking care of the sidewalks in the winter and the yard when it's not. This has only worked for me once, but you never know. If the landlord doesn't have a dedicated full-time maintenance staff it's extra likely to work. They probably know you're a single mom with two awesome kids, if they don't do something cool I will come and punch them with my own hands.

Another way to bring in some extra cash without getting a boss or a time card to manage is to advertise as an independent living assistant who will run errands (pick up prescriptions, shop, drycleaning/laundry pick up and delivery from a full-service 'mat, library) for 2-3 housebound or elderly clients on evenings and weekends. That could net you anywhere from $60-$100 extra a week - and you could probably run most of the errands/shopping while you're doing your own, and/or have the kids with you, so no extra expense of a sitter etc.

Everything is going to be OK. This is what you do: you are the chick who makes it all work out in the end. I really admire that.
