Don't mess with big Momma Nature...

I went out into my garden this morning (and how much do I love being able to say *that*:-) ) to check on my green growing things. In the fall I took a huge batch of leaves and covered the whole thing with them to insulate the roots and bulbs through Victoria's generally warm, but occasionally erratic winter weather. My foresight has proven well founded as the day after I did it we got freezing rain and snow and have had at least one more atypical bout since. However, now that I have been seeing lots of green shoots coming up out of the ground I figured that it might be time to get them cleared off and give them as much encouragement and freedom as possible. Delicate little leaves like that need to be nurtured and were probably labouring under the heavy hummus that the leaves have now formed.

Well it turns out that while it might be a good idea to clear off the leaves anyway, just to give them the room, my plants have been functioning quite well on their own, thank you very much. The shoots that have been coming up have not just been pushing aside the easily moved parts, as I had assumed, but have rather been actively piercing and growing through them. I had to tear several leaves into pieces to get them out from around the stems. My beautiful, fragile-looking little Snowdrops have proven to be especially vicious.

The whole thing makes me feel rather Ozymandias-like.

In other news I got my Kobo eReader back from the manufacturer yesterday and it is working perfectly. I am merrily working my way through "1633" and look forward to many more hours peacefully whiling away the time with it.

All in all, life is looking pretty good right now:-)
